People often ask, “How can we serve at HMCC?” We have many needs so we think the best first step would be for you to take a campus tour with me, Heather Lamp, the Community Engagement Liaison. My goal is to help you better understand our mission, our purpose, and our core values while also showing you the Hope Mission of Coastal Carolina ministry locations. During our time together you will learn how the thrift store takes in donations, meet some of our senior staff, enjoy lunch at the Mission, get a glimpse of meals on wheels, and observe one of the class activities with the clients. My hope is that by the end of the tour the Lord will have shown you where He needs you to serve. It takes many hands and one heart. Come, be a part of our family!

Ready to volunteer? Head over to www.HopeMissionNC.org/volunteering and fill out the short form. I will help get you started!

Shine on!

Come have lunch on us! The Mission Kitchen Chef, Angel, prepares some amazing meals.

Right now we need the following items; butter, paper towels, flour, any PROTEIN, large canned vegetables: green beans, corn, mixed, potatoes, etc.

💝 It would also be nice to receive a few Amazon gift cards (any amount) so that we could purchase random kitchen needs to prepare the meals. For example, a commercial can opener, parchment paper, aluminum foil, immersion blender, and a citrus zester to name a few.😉

Jesus often times went to the outcasts and spoke life into their very brokenness. Not everyone he talked to was willing to surrender; they remained shackled to their sin. But the ones with a contrite heart, they heard the good news of Jesus and for the first time they experienced freedom unlike ever before.

Christ called us to go - share the good news and make disciples. The Hope Mission of Coastal Carolina outreach team did exactly that today. They walked right into the male & female cell blocks being the hands and feet of Jesus. They also facilitated class and provided peer support for the inmates @ Pamlico County Detention Center. It is an honor to say — they are the few!!

“If not me, then who?”

The phrase comes from a quote by United States Marine Corps 1st Lt. Travis Manion, who said it in response to his family questioning why he wanted to return to Iraq for the war. Manion was fatally shot by a sniper while leading a counterattack in 2007, and his family says he lived his life putting others' needs before his own.

Recovery On the Road: Bringing Hope to ENC
THIS WEEK: CRAVEN COUNTY
1st Stop @ 10:00 AM - Town of Bridgeton Park (1311 N. B St.)
2nd Stop @ Noon - Union Point Park
(Downtown New Bern)
3rd Stop @ 2:00 PM - City Park
(Havelock 198 Cunnington Blvd.)

Join us on a unique five-county journey into rural, hard-to-reach areas to spread hope and healing across Eastern North Carolina. The Peer Recovery Center of Carteret County is proud to introduce our groundbreaking 'Recovery On the Road' campaign, a one-of-a-kind initiative that brings recovery support directly to those who need it most.

In rural areas, where access to support may be limited, we're bridging the gap by bringing mobile NA/AA meetings, Bible studies, SAMHSA-based curriculum (exploring the 8 Dimensions of Wellness), and WRAP classes to unreached neighborhoods.

Led by our dedicated outreach peer support specialists, our mission is simple: to extend a hand to everyone seeking recovery, regardless of where they are. Whether you're seeking structured sessions or simply craving connection with like-minded individuals, we're here to offer peer support every step of the way.
Together, let's build a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive in recovery. We invite you to join us on this inspiring journey of transformation and empowerment by participating in the 'Recovery On the Road' campaign. Your involvement can make a significant difference!

Hope Mission of Coastal Carolina Mission House received the gift of a complete makeover made possible by Parker Boats & Correct Craft. Today, the second shift crew finished the hard work of making the space complete, clean, and ready to reopen from top to bottom. We are overflowing with awe and appreciation for all they have done!

Now, we must wait upon God for the success and beg him to prosper our handy works and give us to compass what we aim at for his glory. We are so unworthy of divine assistance, and yet so utterly insufficient to bring any thing to pass without it, that we have need to be earnest for it and to repeat the request:

Let Your work appear to Your servants,
And Your glory to their children.
And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us,
And establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands. -Amen

PEERS ON THE BEACH — EVERY FRIDAY THROUGH THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND.

Finding a person who has experienced substance abuse and mental illness that you can trust and help guide you to substance use and mental health support services is what a lot of people living in active addiction seek on their journey to recovery. But because of stigma and lack of trusted resources, finding a peer support specialist can often be hard to find. That will not be the case for people visiting one of North Carolinas busiest beaches this Summer. Beachgoers in Atlantic Beach will have immediate access to some of North Carolina’s most trusted people in the recovery field - Hope Mission of Coastal Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist. Look for the TEAL shirts!

ATLANTIC BEACH — With a backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, Hope Mission of Carteret County kicked off its 2024 “Peers on the Beach” campaign on Friday at The Circle of Atlantic Beach to help those needing substance use and mental health recovery services in North Carolina.
Headlined by N.C. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kody Kinsley as the keynote speaker, the event also included remarks from CEO and Principal Consultant for Symbiotic Strategies Dr. Michelle Laws, Morehead City Mayor Jerry Jones and Carteret County Sheriff Asa Buck.
“This started really back in December where a lot of our staff started analyzing the coastal counties, specifically rural counties, and we started noticing that there were many gaps, specifically for recovery and reentry,” said Hope Mission Director of Community Services John Sortikys. “We were looking at resources that could be utilized, not necessarily the solution, but resources to kind of fill in the gap and bring in other entities along with us to create a thicker resource network.”
Hope Mission Executive Director Gene McLendon, Carteret County Consolidated Health and Human Services Director Dr. Randall Williams, CEO of Trillium Health Resources Paolo del Vecchio and N.C. Director of Advocacy and Empowerment were also in attendance.
The free “Peers on the Beach” event included music, food and information, and beachgoers along a five-mile stretch of Atlantic Beach will have access to certified peer support specialists who work in the recovery field throughout the summer.
Every Friday through Labor Day weekend, Hope Mission’s peer support specialists will be out on the beach wearing teal shirts on certain days, engaging with beachgoers to provide peer support and information to people in need of substance use and mental health recovery services.
“Aside from maybe a post overdose response team or maybe a detox, there was nothing,” said Sortikys. “So, Peers on the Beach is really designed as an anti-stigma campaign. You have Carteret County, which is a tourist-heavy county, and a lot of people that are coming through may know of a family member or themselves that have a substance use or mental health disorder and are not able to get a resource, network or someone they can talk to.”
Sortikys said that the Peer Recovery Center of Carteret County has invested in its peer specialists by putting them through a range of courses and training programs to make sure they can handle a wide range of subjects. To become licensed drug and alcohol counselors, a few peer support specialists have also enrolled in college institutions to obtain their substance use certificates.
In 2021 alone, North Carolina experienced a 22% increase in overdose deaths. The opioid crisis has been especially devastating in rural and coastal areas in North Carolina, areas of the state where treatment resources are often far and few. Peer support specialists play a critical role in helping individuals who are suffering from substance use addiction get into and stay in recovery.
For those needing help with addiction, call 252-222-3888 or the N.C. Peer Line, 855-733-7762, or go to peerrecoverycenter.org.

History of Hope Mission

About Hope Mission

Hope Mission of Carteret County, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. Hope Mission serves the Carteret County community by providing food, shelter, emergency financial assistance, and other means of support such as emotional support, mentoring and counseling.

At Hope Mission, we subscribe to the belief that homeless folks and those that are on the edge or have substance abuse issues have lost their sense of identity. Much of the time that loss of a sense of identity is because of the disconnection from family and community. These folks feel as though they are standing alone against the whole world. And they become discouraged from thinking that life can ever be any better. They lose hope. We do everything we can to give them back that sense of belonging. We believe this is vital to their ability to transition back to the full and rewarding lives God intended them to live.
