Eight years ago, I started a journey questioning the rationale and process of studying the Bible with children. From this journey, I came to the conclusion that a child needs to know who God is, what purpose God has for the child, and how the child can grow in Christ. After developing this process (these studies), I began using it as my preferred tool to study with children, and many kids have given their lives to Christ because of it.

LLA Banquet Time!!! Last night, my wife and I took pictures with our kids (our son who’s a senior and our daughter who’s a freshman) before their high school banquet! I must say, it was quite a moment for me as a dad. I realize more and more how time is flying and I want to get as much time as possible in with them before they’re out the house!

If there’s a message that I can share with ALL parents every day that becomes truer every day, it is “enjoy these moments while they’re young because before you know it, they’ll be grown!!!”

I think we are very blessed!

In 1963, my mom graduated Valedictorian of her high school class and was accepted to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa…the same year that President John F. Kennedy federalized National Guard troops and deployed them to the University of Alabama to force its desegregation. My mother could go to college for free, with scholarships and grants. However, my grandmother, who understandably did not “trust” what the “government” was offering, did not allow her to go. She was the oldest of 14 children and was still very much needed at home.

She tried a technical community college for Business instead. 3 months before graduation, she fell ill and fainted at school. She wanted to finish, but her mom honestly thought it would kill her to continue.

In October of 1965, at the age of 20, my mom met and married my dad. He was well established and already had 8 kids of his own. She still had dreams of finishing school and “fulfilling her potential.” Those dreams were abruptly altered when she found out she was 3 months pregnant in January of 1966.

Nine babies and three miscarriages later, she had formulated a new dream. She would give her kids what she felt she didn’t have…endless support and opportunity. She would NEVER get in the way of an opportunity, no matter her own fears and insecurities. The one thing she now wanted more than her own degree was for all of her children to graduate from college.
She sowed. And she reaped. We are the direct result of her sacrifices.

I know the role that the church is playing to counteract the notion that wearing makeup, jewelry, nice clothes, fresh haircuts, etc are “not sin.” But, what role is the church playing to counteract the lack of self-confidence and the lack of self-pride that children are taught to feel without these things!

Society says you’re beautiful if you have them, at least a part of the church’s message can be you’re beautiful if you don’t-or are we not beautiful if we don’t?!?

What if the church had a celebratory “Going Natural” day? I wonder how many would attend church that day.

Wow! Look who just got accepted to my Alma Mater!!! Our Son !!! I’m soooo excited!

I won’t lie! My years at this BLESSED school changed my life!!!

How true this was for me!!! I remember once in 9th grade (By the way, this is way too late to be trying to introduce this) that my class began talking about Harriet Tubman. Many of the Blacks laughed during that point. Our teacher rebuked us and said, this is your history. Little did she know that for me, laughter was the ONLY way that I could deal with the embarrassment, shame, anger, hypocrisy, and injustice that I felt was still taking place during my day, at my school, in my life!

I wish I had discovered my voice back then. Not only would I have demanded more time to dialogue about the past and present injustice, I would have asked MY class WHY a woman had to risk her life just to have the freedom that ALL humans are entitled to!

Trust Him!!! He’s Faithful!!!

It’s NOT possible to read Ephesians 4, live it, AND still be mean! The enemy has deceived believers to think life can be lived ANY WAY and we can still be called CHRISTIANS! Reality is, if we ignore reading or doing His instructions, it’s NO EXCUSE in judgement!
