“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”
Jeremiah 33:3
Often in life we are faced with situations which seem impossible. Our abilities, logic or intelligent are simply not enough to fix the problems we’re dealing with. We try our best to figure things out and find the help we need from others, only to find that human wisdom cannot remedy our troubles. At some point, we all have to deal with seasons of difficulty when experience trials and hardships.
As born-again Christians, we know our Heavenly Father is in control of everything and can fix whatever is wrong in our lives. Yet we do not take the time to even pray about what is happening. Instead we cling to our problems and try to tinker with them and find our own solutions when the Lord is standing beside us, offering us His help if only we ask for it.
Our verse this week is found in the book penned by the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah was a contemporary of Daniel in the Bible. Jeremiah is known as the Weeping Prophet and with good reason! He was a prophet in the southern kingdom of Judah which was corrupt with sin and idolatry. As the Children of Israel continued in their own ways, eventually they fell to the Empire of Babylon and the people were taken away into captivity. The Lord had sent Jeremiah to His people to warn them of their impending demise, but they did not listen. Instead, they were enslaved and humiliated. Jeremiah continued to preach repentance, but they would not listen.
Though Jeremiah was a faithful servant and prophet of the Lord Almighty, he suffered greatly throughout his life. After a series of great trials and injustices, Jeremiah found himself unjustly beaten, accused of treason and thrown into prison by his own countrymen for preaching again the sin in the land. Eventually, he witnessed the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians and perhaps worst of all, Jeremiah was alone in his suffering. The Bible tells us that he was not allowed to marry, that his entire family had abandoned him and that the people of Israel turned against him and did not believe him. For 40 years Jeremiah faithfully delivered God’s message to the people of Judah without success. I would have wept, too, if I had served the Lord for four decades and it seemed as if nothing was working!
At some point on life’s journey, we all face difficulties and wonder why God allows us to struggle and suffer. We might even be tempted to think that the Lord doesn’t love us. But the truth is, our faith is built during times of trial and trouble. When our faith is shaken, we find that our faith is strengthened. Jeremiah learned this lesson and God taught him how to stand in faith when he was discouraged and didn’t know what to do.
During our hard times, we must turn to the Lord and ask Him for help and direction and to work in each situation. Jeremiah never saw success in his ministry, but he learned to trust God above all else and to continue to serve Him by crying out to Him in the trial. The promise we find in Jeremiah 33:3 guarantees us that God will answer us every time we cry out to Him and do great and mighty things for us. It is during these times that we learn Who God is and what He can do.
The Lord God Almighty is here – standing right beside you in life. Just like He said to Jeremiah, He is telling you to draw near, and call out Him. He will answer you and show you great and mighty things that you need to know today. Stay strong in the Lord and live in faith!
Blessings,
Pastor
“Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.”
Philippians 4:4
When we first read this verse, we might think, “Be happy all the time? Impossible!” But before we delve into what this verse means in our lives today, we have to define what joy means. Joy is not the same as happiness. Let’s look at the difference.
Happiness is based upon the happenings in your life or upon your circumstances. Happiness comes when everything is going your way and there are seemingly no problems or struggles on the horizon. Wouldn’t it be great if that were always the case every day? The truth is that life is full of difficult conditions at home, at work and even within us. This makes happiness a rare enjoyment and not an ongoing attitude.
Joy on the other hand comes from knowing Jesus. True and lasting joy can be in your life continually because of Who Jesus is and what He means to you. Rather than basing our joy and contentment on what is happening around us and to us, we can find it by basing it on what the Lord has done and will do for us.
How do we live in the joy of the Lord? Our memory verse this week helps us apply this truth. To rejoice is not to fake happiness and act like everything is perfect in your life. Instead, it is the process of finding joy over and over as we focus on the Lord, His truths and the promises of His Word. Remember, as we learned in Galatians 5:22-23, the trait of joy is part of the fruit of the Spirit. As we walk with in the presence of the Lord throughout the day, He reminds us that He is over us and in us and that He will take care of us no matter what occurs. When I am walking with Him, I don’t have to be upset or miserable by what is happening in life. I can find joy again and again as I remind myself of the blessed promises God gives of love, protection, provision and care. How can we not be joyful continually with hope like this?
Joy also has a supernatural ability that will add power to your life. God’s Word tells us in Nehemiah 8:10 that, “the joy of the Lord is your strength.” By choosing to rejoice over and over in the Lord as you live your life, you will find that you are better able to face those difficult circumstances and disappointments as you are reminded that God alone is where true joy comes from! As Philippians 4:4 teaches, rejoice in the Lord and then rejoice again!
There is an old saying that will prove to be true in your life as it has been in mine. If you look within yourself, you’ll be depressed. If you look around you, you’ll be stressed. If you look up to the Lord, you’ll find rest, be blessed and live in His joy!
Blessings,
Pastor Matt

God has a mid-week miracle for each of us: will we pick it up?
Wed. 7:00 p.m.
“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” - John 15:5
In John chapter fifteen we read instructions Jesus gave to His disciples just prior to His crucifixion. Knowing that He will no longer walk with them each day in person, He began to prepare them for their future without His physical presence. Jesus taught them that in order to live productive spiritual lives, they must stay connected to Him spiritually, even though they are not with Him physically. To illustrate this, the Lord compares Himself as a Vine and His followers as branches of the Vine. He clearly tells them that they must be spiritually connected to Him to have any fruitfulness or productivity in their lives.
In any plant, a branch that is not connected to the main vine cannot produce fruit. All of the nutrients, water and support are cut off, the branch withers and all growth and production of fruit stops. The same is true in our spiritual lives. If we are not connected, walking, and talking with the Lord, we will not produce any spiritual fruit in our lives. As Jesus said, without Him we can do nothing!
What is meant by spiritual fruit? One of our previous memory verses, Galatians 5:22-23, tells us what should be growing in our lives as Christians. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.”
These traits are called the fruit of the Spirit, and they develop in you as evidence that you are walking with the Lord Jesus and growing to become more like Him.
I know in my own life, I want to be more loving, have greater joy and peace and all of these traits of the Lord growing and becoming stronger in me. When we do not see these characteristics growing in us it is because we are not connected to the Holy Spirit of God as we should be. Why does this happen? It is not because we don’t have access to the power of the Spirit available to us. When we are born again, the sweet Holy Spirit of God comes to indwell us and walk with us each day. As believers, we have all of the power of the Spirit in us, and we are sealed as one of God’s redeemed children. That power is what enables us to live in Christ and change to become like Him. However, for this to happen we must yield ourselves to Him and allow Him to guide, correct, direct, and change us and our behaviors. This is also called walking in the Spirit.
This yielding to the Spirit’s control or connection is what brings production of these spiritual fruits in our lives. When we live our lives under our own control, yielding to our own feelings, opinions and choices, spiritual fruit stops growing or withers as we are no longer controlled by God’s Holy Spirit. But by living a life yielded to God and His control each day, we can stay connected to Him.
How then do we stay connected to the Lord, so we have fruitful and productive spiritual lives with great impact for the Lord in this world? Each day, walk with the Lord aware of His presence with you, and talk with Him in continual prayer. Take God’s Word into your life through reading or listening to it to hear His voice. Then follow and obey the Lord’s direction in your life, allowing Him to guide and control you. This is connection to the Vine and what will bring spiritual fruit, productivity, and growth in Christ!
