Artist Statement
David Krase’s crudely rendered paintings and drawings are characterized by colorful grounds rife with abstracted figuration, neo-tribal motifs, otherworldly specters and pseudo-extraterrestrials. A more or less ‘outsider artist’ Krase’s oeuvre is a prodigious output of work produced in a wide array of mediums including pen and ink, oil, acrylic, chalk pastel and literally anything Krase adopts along the way. His ritual etching, scrawling and scraping gestures imbue the canvas with an ‘after image,’ what Krase suggests is just one symptom of his urge to create paintings within paintings. Infinity – energy without end – is the insignia driving force of his stroke. The undulating lines, oblong figures and jagged psychedelia Krase commits to canvas evoke the presence of embryos, umbilical cords, roots, flows, conduits, fleets and misfiring synapses.
David Krase began painting full time in 2009 under the guidance of his mentor visual artist Bert Long Jr. He was formerly a trained classical guitarist and trail blazing pioneer of the downtempo electronic musical genre known as Trip Hop. Often attacked on stage for his outrageous lyricism during his days as a musician, Krase brings equal mayhem to his works works on canvas, paper and wood adopting the spirit of African diasporic traditions particularly within the realm of Blues, Jazz and painting. Krase also names his work as a Social Worker and Special Ed teacher – two positions which have led him to mentor marginalized populations including Black and Latino youth, victims of abuse and Vietnam Vets for over twenty years – as having played a clear role in his turn to art as a therapeutic medium. He specifically notes a period in LA working with several members of the notorious inner city gang known as MS-13 as being formative. He recalls student affiliates of the gang’s unusual use of color, figuration and writing, and sees traces of their aesthetic appear today in his paintings and drawings.
Currently, Krase’s process oriented labors in the studio absolve the crisis of his lifetime of emotional tumult supporting victims of physical and sexual abuse the artist absorbed working as he did. His visual compositions have been likened to the late great graffiti writer and painter Jean Michael Basquiat and bare oblique reference to Cubism, Science Fiction and Horror. Mounted in handmade frames, Krase’s cast of objects, beings and vegetal spirals offer a veritable ‘portal’ into a mysterious, murky and darkly ethereal terrain.
