Foothills Wildlife Rehab
Licensed wildlife rehabber dedicated to rescue, rehabilitation and release. Permit Number: 22-WR02396
Did you know that late August through September is baby copperhead season in North Carolina? Young copperheads look exactly like adults, except they have a yellow-tipped tail which they will wiggle to lure prey within striking distance.
Copperheads are the only venomous snake that can be found in all 100 counties, be careful out there, y'all!

Since one of the removal services is now sending calls to us for FREE removal, It's time to discuss this again! Removal is never going to be a rehabilitator's job!
First, in the state of North Carolina, it is illegal to relocate an animal in this fashion. Unless it is going into rehabilitation (meaning there is a medical need for it to be captured), relocating a wild animal, especially these species, means you must kill them when you take them off of the property.
Second, wildlife is inconveniencing you, the animals are not truly in need. For that you call a removal service, and you pay to remove those animals, understanding that they are now legally required to kill that animal when they do (though not all will tell you this).
So let’s discuss what is really going on in these situations:
• Usually in these instances, the humans have basically baited the animals, either by leaving food outside (raccoons and foxes can’t read, so even if the bowl says CAT, they will assume it is a free buffet) or a trash can that provides both entertainment and food
• Humane traps aren’t always as humane as people think. We have received many animals with limbs and/or tails cut off when the trap door closes on them. And I can’t count how many opossums that are now missing limbs due to those traps we get in.
• If you do set a trap, there is no way to ensure you will trap/harm the animal you are intending to. I had one friend who spent $300 to have the trappers release cats they had caught yet never caught the opossum she’d hired them to capture.
• Moving any animal to a completely unknown location is just cruel. It is going to be terrifying for the animal. You don’t know what other animals are in the new area that may not want this one there.
So, what should you do? BE PROACTIVE!!!!
• Figure out what you are doing to attract these animals and stop.
• Remove outside food by sundown (though it’s better not to have it outside at all)
• Put trash cans in the closed garage, or get trashcans that actually lock
• Check your home for any potential entry points and remove them/block them.
If you find yourself in a position where you do need wildlife to leave your area, follow our evacuation flyer, it is humane and effective and costs very little to do. It is very easy and in the long run will save you lots of money and save animals’ lives.
This way the animals can also live!

For everyone asking who is taking new apprentices
Want to become a wildlife rehabilitator? This position is for you! In NC, new rehabbers are required to apprentice with licensed rehabilitators for 1 year. We require our apprentices to be on site for at least 3 months to gain valuable knowledge working one on one with our rehab staff. Apprentices will learn the basics of intake, medication, feeding, formula, diet and so much more. They will also work to help run the Center by assisting with daily care of in-house patients and Center tasks.
When: August-October
Days: 3 days/week
How to apply: Email your resume and cover letter to Morgan at [email protected]. If you are selected to join the Apprenticeship program, we will reach out to schedule a zoom interview
Started a new fundraiser for an incubator. Can you please spare some change to help me be able to continue to care for multiple species?

Happy Wednesday everyone! I wanted to let everyone know that I am full right now and only excepting squirrels at this time unless it’s an emergency of course. Thank you all for your continued support and follow us on TikTok for daily lives.
Please do the right thing and reach out to a rehabber before you cause more harm to the wildlife…
Far, far too often, wildlife rehabilitators get calls about baby animals that the finders have had for weeks. Often, it’s urgent— “Something’s wrong,” or, “It cant walk right,” or, “I think it may be dying.” These animals ultimately die due to improper care by people who thought that a Google search could enable them to successfully rehabilitate wildlife.
One of the most common reasons people give for raising wild animals without training is, “I thought it would be a good educational opportunity for my kids.” Seeing an animal die a very slow, painful death from improper care is certainly not what these parents had in mind.
I’m a parent myself. I do understand how attached children can get to wildlife and how hard it is to say no to, “Can I keep him?”
But as parents, we all have a duty to teach our kids proper lessons about wildlife. Use an orphaned or injured wild animal as a way to teach your children respect for nature, and to emphasize the importance of giving them a good chance at life in the wild where they belong. Teach your children that a living creature is not a plaything or an experiment or an after-school hobby. Teach your children that loving something sometimes means saying goodbye.
Please call a rehabilitator if you find a baby animal in need of help.
My favorite baby season is coming soon 🐿💕
