Here’s the video that was caught by Chupacabra Offroad. It doesn’t show the very beginning, but shows enough. It’s a great example to why we should all make sure safety is a priority. To think we went on to finish the race and with a class win after this is also what’s amazing.

*****Race Report*****
Best in the Desert 2018 Vegas to Reno

This year the Nevada desert tried to get us, but we wouldn’t let it. With a great start and a fast car the race was sure to be memorable. Things were going great in our Can-Am Off-Road X3 with Pam and Cliff in the first leg. Pam immediately started passing cars even with a downpour of rain making things slippery. At approximately mile 158 Pam had a 10 mile lead on 2nd place and continued to pull away. The car was then handed off to Christian and Cliff and they continued where Pam left off. Then at pit 6 RM220 10 year old Hank Hall got in as navigator for 60mi and he had a blast! Christian said he did amazing for his 1st time in an actual desert race. Hank and Christian were able to hunt down two more cars by the time they made it to pit 8. At pit 8 our amazing pit crew FORCE Offroad made the decision to get Hank out of the car before fueling, and adjust the belts for James the next co pilot. It was by far the best decision.... As we were taking all the proper steps to fueling, and using all the proper safety equipment our car sparked a fire from splashed fuel. You never think it’s going to happen to you, but this time it did. We believe it was due to hot brake rotors, but we’re not 100% sure. Thank goodness for the quick thinking by our pit crew and the surrounding pit teams we quickly got the fire out. The only damage was the triangle window net melted. It’s obvious it’s not SFI rated like our Hostyle Racing door nets. Christian was in the car, when it flashed but got out very fast and was unharmed. What could have been a tragic event turned out a great learning experience and a test to show how important it is to have the proper equipment. Never sacrifice on safety equipment. It was just last week that Christian had our 20lb extinguishers recharged and filled. Who would have thought we would have had to use them. We will be adding a dry break system very soon to avoid any spillage of excess fuel. After all of this was over, and we made sure all was good Christian and James got in the car to finish the race, but that wasn’t so easy. 13 miles from pit 9 they hit a rock which gave them a double flat. With a surprise of a broken jack and a small shovel they began to dig holes in order to remove the tires while the crew figured out how to get a second tire to the car. Now mind you we only carry 1 spare. Again our chase crew did an amazing job spoke with car 981, and they were kind enough to take them a tire and a jack They were able to get the flats changed with a small shovel and a bottle jack from the FORCE truck and get on their way. Then 1 mi later the front right uniballs both decided they wanted to break. As they MacGyvered up a fix they came in to pit 9 about 2 hours later on 3 tires and a prayer. That was not going to stop us though. We had all the spare parts, and the perfect crew. It took approximately 1 hour to fix, and they were back on course. This time it was Christian and Cliff in for the finish. They had 226mi to go. Christian didn’t want to take any chances and strapped on a 2nd spare just in case, and of course they never needed it. His motto is “If you have it you won’t need it.” Somewhere in the middle of the night we were able to regain the lead and Hall Motorsports ended up with a finish, and a class win at around 5:30 in the morning. It was a long tough day, and all of us had been up for well over 24 hrs (except Hank), but we were determined to not let the desert beat us... Huge props to Best in the Desert for once again putting on a great race, and a fun tough course. It’s one we’ll never forget for sure. We want to thank all of FORCE OFFROAD for all the time, knowledge, and laughs you put into our team. You’re definitely apart of the Hall Motorsports family. We couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you to Arizona Specialty Demolition, and other surrounding teams for all the help with the fire. To team 981 Rodney Pybum for taking the tire and jack. We couldn’t have done it without all your help. Thank you to Nicholas Olsen with Chupacabra Off-road for sending us your GoPro footage. It’s a great tool to study and learn from. Thank you to 9Five Motorsports for prepping our race car. You guys do an awesome job at getting us race ready. And then there are the people that help out our race team.
