West Virginia University's Jackson Hole Photography Workshop is a 10-day intensive field course that explores the diverse and remote region of northwestern Wyoming. Among the locations visited during the workshop are Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park, the National Elk Refuge, the historic Mormon Row homestead site, an authentic western rodeo, and a variety of neighboring locatio
"I could never thank you enough for allowing me to join you on this trip because it has been life-changing for how I view myself as a friend, a photographer, and a traveler. One of my biggest takeaways from this trip is becoming informed on the location I am going to. I think that the fact that I was educated about the environment, locations, and architecture made me extremely susceptible to building a connection to the place. I am so glad that this workshop is solely based on learning how to bond and care for a location. As well as what it means to see places through an artist's eye and absorb and take what I have learned to the field." -Alyssa, JHPW 2024
"The lessons learned on this trip in relation to camera knowledge were so often learned first hand, which really helped me to understand and enjoy the learning process. I am happy to say that I will continue to expand my knowledge of cameras, as I have found a new love for photography, and would like to say thank you to both professor Sherwin and Nate for giving me such an amazing and world changing experience that has helped me both spiritually and mentally." - Tara, JHPW 2024
"In short, not only did I learn how to operate my camera, but I fell in love with the art of photography. Before this trip I was frustrated and debating whether or not I really wanted to continue in my photography minor, but now I couldn’t be more excited. I think going on the Jackson Hole Photography Workshop before taking a photo class was the best possible thing for me because I was able to learn how I learn best, in the field. I have a new motivation, I have shared experiences with students and professors, and I have a renewed desire to learn. I was reminded just why I wanted to start photography in the first place, to capture creation in time." - Eliza, JHPW 2024
"During this whole week I would like to say I have a favorite moment or a specific thing that I think about daily now, but to be honest the entire trip was my favorite moment. I didn’t know I would have so much fun, meet new people that I loved so much, and get to have one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Each day my love for Wyoming and even photography grew.
When I was considering applying for this trip I didn’t think how much it would impact me as a person, looking back I would tell myself over and over again to apply. Each time I think about it I cannot believe I was lucky enough to have this experience and be a part of such a unique learning environment." - Kylee, JHPW 2024
"'Mom, it is just someplace where I will experience a little bit of nature and take pictures,' I said, without knowing at all that this trip would keep my breath, my soul, and my heart." - Pam, JHPW 2024
"This class for me was more than just a learning opportunity but became an amazing experience that I will cherish forever. Besides working and learning new ideas and techniques for photography, I also gained a great relationship with two professors and classmates who became great friends. I could not have asked for a more perfect way to start my last year of college and will continue to grow and work on what I have learned forever." - Cassidy, JHPW 2024
"Prior to the trip, we read about the national parks in the area and the history surrounding them. We learned about the animals, ecosystem and environment, the history of Native Americans, and about the impact of humans and development on both animals and the environment. This knowledge was all very new to me and I think that it was important that we read it before going, as it gave us some insight. This was one of the best trips I have taken so far, and I am grateful that I was able to go on it. It was an experience I will never forget." -Kaitlyn, JHPW 2024
"This trip has been one of the best, most memorable experiences I've had so far. I learned, improved, and challenged myself. Both the professors helped me improve, see my pictures differently, and create the best possible experience for us. I will forever remember the memories and skills I learned on this trip. Professor Sherwin's knowledge of the land and critiques on color and composition, as well as Professor Ward's extensive knowledge of the science and technology behind the camera and Photoshop skills, make them the perfect photography professor duo." -Alex, JHPW 2024
"Professor Sherwin’s mixture of tour guide, instructor, and friend made for one of the best guided experiences I’ve ever had. Combined with Nate’s seemingly endless knowledge of technology, camera equipment, and quick wit, I feel like I learned a lot while having more fun than I’ve ever had in an academic situation." -Max, JHPW 2024
"Overall, I thought that the Jackson Hole Photography Workshop was a once in a lifetime experience. I am forever grateful that it was my first introduction to the beauty of Wyoming and landscape photography. I knew that I wanted to be a part of this GPS course since my first-year seminar class freshman year. I wish that I could go back and tell my freshman self to apply each year I could!" - Lizzy, JHPW 2024
Always impressed with the student work that comes out of this course! Here are some of my favorites from the 2024 group.
So much to share from another incredible workshop! This crew of students was up for anything and hiked farther than ever before. They experienced blizzard like conditions one day and 80 degrees the next. They swam in ice cold glacier fed water and climbed on snow covered 11,000 foot peaks. They learned how to defend themselves with bear spray and vastly improved their photography skills. Most importantly, they made lifelong memories and friendships.

2023 Workshop Images!
We had a special visit this year from West Virginia University Photography and 2017 workshop alum, Victoria Lilly Photography, and her sweet dog, Thor. Victoria fell in love with the Greater Yellowstone area and is now the Head Wrangler at the CM Ranch in Dubois, WY. She’s also quite an accomplished photographer and shared some of her great work with the group.
