Using extracellular vesicles, researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have come up with a unique delivery method of mRNA therapy.

"mRNA therapies have the potential to address a number of health issues, from protein loss as we age to hereditary disorders where beneficial genes or proteins are missing," said Betty Kim, M.D., Ph.D., professor of Neurosurgery.

According to the study, extracellular vesicles, including exosomes and microvesicles, play a major role in the transport of biomolecules and nucleic acids, including mRNAs, within the human body. "Extracellular vesicles mRNA therapy was used to deliver COL1A1 mRNA, which encodes the collagen protein, into the skin cells of a laboratory model that mimics aging-damaged skin in humans."
