The kids will soon be back in school leaving you with all that free time! Whatever shall you do?? Well, sit down and think about it..... Unless...your chair seat is falling apart!! Never fear! Help is here! I WEAVE YOU KNOT, located inside Rust&Dust, 140 W Pine St in Mt Airy, NC, offers custom chair seat weaving of all kinds as well as instruction- classes or one-on-one! Fall is a great time to learn chair seat weaving! For August, we will be focusing on rush weave seats. This type seat is very common for dining room and/or ladder back chairs. Also, a fairly simple weave to learn and requires only a little patience to become a pro! Classes are two-sessions for 2-2.5 hrs each and we are scheduling lunchtime classes and evening classes. Unlike every other thing, our tuition prices are the same they have been for years! Only $85 and we provide all the materials- even the chair!! Want to bring your own chair? Then tuition drops to $75! Class size is limited to three per class so plenty of personal instructor guidance! Just comment "interested" and we will get you our openings for August.
Stay tuned for our most popular and requested classes coming for September -- stained glass mosaic art! Registration and info for these classes opens August 15 and they fill up very quickly!!

Ladies! Have a skirt you love but no longer wear for some reason? No, I'm not implying that you have gained weight! But for whatever reason, here's the perfect sooooo simple re-do! On a standard lamp shade, a size 6 ladies skirt is a perfect fit!! And the options are limitless! Lined or unlined, fancy or everyday, covered with adornments or plain and lovely!! Plus, the added bonus of going into your favorite thrift shop and buying a handful of size 6 skirts and just let the clerk stare at you!
I also love using little girls fancy dresses for these lamp shades! So dainty and fun!!

I responded yesterday to a FB post asking where there was a cluster of antique venues within an hour and half to two hours from Raleigh. My response (feel free to SHARE if you agree!!)

If you actually want to do some BUYING, then Mt Airy is your place!! 10 or so shops all within walking distance and another 8 or so within a 5 mile radius...and that doesnt even count Pilot Mtn then all the way N on 52 to Hillsville, VA!! Did I mention Memorial Day and Labor Day??!! And not one booth shops either ... There are a few that are that quaint owner/vendor kind of shops but several that are 20+ vendors... And trust me when I say, I've been doing this a looonnnng time from Round Top, Tx to Washington, DC....and I have settled here in Mt Airy NC bc the shops here are shoppable! All the stores around here have folks that are sharp buyers so they can put prices out there that even in this economy- you can afford!! In fact, most all of shops and vendors leave enough meat on the bone that shop owners and vendors can afford to buy here and still resale the items back at their home shops! In my experience, and I have been in just about every area mentioned in these comments, and if you are into LOOKING in museum grade shops full of ooh's and aah's and a couple of 'I wish's' tossed in, those shops are EXCELLENT for that!! But I would bet that you don't need to drive a truck to visit them bc you most likely are not going to fill it! But here in Mt Airy, drive a truck, a big one, or heck go ahead and rent that Penske box truck! You will need it!! In fact, you may want to be prepared to ask shop owners if they have any storage available so you can return in a few days, or a week, and pickup all the rest of your awesome buys!! I KNOW in my shop (warning- shameless plug ahead..... Rust&Dust, 140 W Pine St, in downtown) our inventory will not be the most perfect, carefully manicured pieces all arranged to have flow as you pass through.... But it will be awesome uniques and oddities that will have you saying over and over-'I remember seeing that in my Grandma's house!!' And like every other shop owner/vendor in this town, we will be HONEST with you to the extent of our knowledge and research as to authenticity and any prior damage/repairs, etc...... Now I am certainly not saying sellers in other towns will lie and deceive you, but I am saying that as a whole, sellers here will research and KNOW their inventory so that you don't get home and find out that you are indeed holding a reproduction you paid authentic price for! In fact, I am a seller, as others here are, that will refund your money and expenses if you come back with irrefutable evidence that I misstated a piece as authentic, original or genuine and I was wrong on it! Im not a cocky know it all, but it's after 1AM here and I am researching pieces to place in storefront in the morning! I love sharing back stories on pieces with new owners! Sooooo.... Come on over to Mt Airy, listen to some incredible bluegrass music, eat some awesome food, and fill your truck with pieces that you are PROUD to tell your friends (or your husband!!) exactly what you paid for it!! They won't believe you, but it's worth a shot!! Then leave time at the end of the afternoon to spend an hour in our Bargain Basement where you may have to do some rummaging, but there's no telling what you may turn up! Hey ... Make it an overnight stay as there are one OR TWO QUALITY auctions within a 10 mile radius 6 nights a week!! No high pressure auctions... Just friendly family owned and operated auctions full of fun, great food and terrific buys !! Heck, holler at me and I'll even save you a seat beside me at the auction and buy you supper!! On the menu tonight 6/27: shrimp & chicken Creole, chicken marsala with fresh zucchini, green beans w baby taters, corn maque choice and follow it all up with a bing cherry cobbler!! Bring your Bev of choice bc all we have is bottled waters! All this fine entertainment and some more good groceries are free as always, but we are a non-profit org and we always have a donation can out and appreciate whatever you feel led to do!! Original Confederate First National flag circa 1861-1863 Stars and Bars. Confederate reunion first national machine sewn flag with 7 stars, comprised of applied cotton on linen ground with two metal grommets and a closed loop. Flag has stars sewn on both sides in a close circle. The stars are slightly irregular in shape and not identical indicating they were hand cut. Also uses both straight stitches as well as zig zag stitches. The flag does not fluoresce under UV light. The entire flag is somewhat dirty but no real noticeable staining. Flag has been stored for years in a cedar chest and no attempt to wash it has been made. No maker's marks. 28" H x 58" W. Late 19th century. Provenance: Georgia collection; among items purchased in the 1960's from the old location of the A. P. Stewart Chapter of the UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy). Flag has very limited damage along the base edges shown in pictures.

YARD SALE FRIENDS!! Please be aware and very vigilant this Memorial Day weekend!! Surry Co is being plagued by folks using MOVIE PROP money!! Yes ..... There is such a thing! Looks and feels like real money but it is so not!! Spoke with a police officer today as I had a $100 bill get past me and I NEVER EVEN KNEW it!! People (anyone at all! Minors, criminals, etc!) can now go online and buy like a hundred $100 dollar bills for $4.98!! The safety net for them that keeps them from being arrested is, when confronted by a store mgr etc to quickly be like "OMG! That is a souvenir from our vacation! I'm so sorry! May I please have it back?". Sounds reasonable right?? It's not! Don't give it back to them! Rip it up in front of them and tell them to move along! Then still make that 911 call to report it and tell police what the person looked like!!
Also be aware that the counterfeit pen DOES NOT always catch a counterfeit bill ... The only 100% method is a THOROUGH EXAMINATION of the bill!! CK out pic here with a good bill and bad bill.... Hopefully you can identify the copy pretty easily ... But when you are doing 30 jobs at your yard sale and totally distracted, would you catch it?? I would answer yes every time..... But I didn't catch it last Friday!! And trust me, these folks know to just hang around until that slam busy, totally distracted moment arrives for you and suddenly it's Ma'am, I need to pay right now- I just got a call from work, wife, etc.... They will try to make you focus on other things as the bill is passed.... "Can you add that one more time?" Or "Wait a sec.... I have a quarter in my purse somewhere! " Anything at all they can say so you are adding their total again or etc... and you never take an honest look at the bill they r handing you!
Please note that the pic here is one of a movie prop bill with fairly obvious signs ... But I saw one a couple days ago and it was TOTALLY identical except for one small change.... On the back side of the bill in the top left corner was the word 'COPY' in fairly small letters.... Seasoned cashiers could miss that one!!
So let's all be extra mindful and vigilant this weekend and not another reason that criminals come to Surry Co bc they can dupe folks more easily here! Let's send a loud message to those who would steal from us or try to cheat us that WE ARE NOT TAKING IT ANYMORE!! NOT ON MY WATCH!! Take 5 mins and Google 'movie prop money' then familiarize yourself with the various bills they have on the market for people to buy...
