Cruz Del Tercer Milenio. Coquimbo’s Cruz Del Tercer Milenio, Third Millenium Cross, was built to commemorate the birth of Christ over 2000 years ago and was blessed by the Pope John Paul II. Construction began in 1999 and was completed in 2021. The cross is made of concrete and is 272-feet high and 131-feet wide and sits on the El Vigia Hill. Besides being taller than Rio de Jannero’s Christ the Redeemer statue, it is one of the largest crosses in the world. Designed by architect Gabriel Guarda, the base has three pillars that form a tripod, a reference to the Holy Trinity. There is a 2,000-step staircase or use an elevator to have a remarkable 360 ° panoramic view of all Coquimbo, its bay, and the Pacific Ocean.

We saw the Southern Cross!

Yesterday was a shopping day. We went to a few markets and saw some of the city.

Another perfect day in Chile. We travelled to Isla Damas for a penguin tour. We were at the tail end of the Atacama Desert. Dinner was homemade Moqueca.

We started the day with a 5 mile walk to the lighthouse. (We had no idea it was that far!) John taught us how to make empanadas, I will need to buy a food processor when I get home. We finished the night with a fun game of Mexican train. Also pics of John and Jaime’s house and cabanas.

Another great day in Chile. Cliff and Bunny arrived from Seattle. We went to the Elqui Vally to tour some Pisco Distilleries. We ended the night with an excellent dinner at the beach in La Serena.

Today’s Chilean adventure took us to the towns of Llanquihue and Frutillar. Unique statues were scattered throughout, the swans of Llanquihue were my favorite. Frutillar had adorable shops, german architecture and the homes had yards full of beautiful flowers. Next stop, La Serena.

Day 3 - Chiloe Island. We drove to Dalcahue, a cute fishing village. We got out of the car long enough to get some pics of the boats, then the rain and wind started. Everything was closed, we decided to try another town, then realized we needed to leave the island if possible. The drive back was treacherous, with fallen trees and strong winds gusting up to 70 mph. After waiting for the ferry to reopen after the storm, we finally arrived back in Puerto Varas. Thankfully, the evening ended on a positive note with a delicious dinner. Salchipapa & pollo Arvejado & Guatitas Jardinera

Day 2-Chiloe Island. Our first Flamingo sighting. The Market. Lunch was cazue de vacuno, very good. Pisco Sours with dinner. It was a great day!

A perfect first day in Chile with . Osorno Volcano and Petrohué waterfalls. Empanadas. Meat dinner.

Look who finally finished a book! Not sure what my problem has been, but I'm finally reading again. This was a good thriller. I have to say, I was a bit confused at the end. If you've read this one, what did you think?
