Nobody likes having their temperature taken but we make it as easy as possible! 😝
🦎 Back in July, we performed this 2 year old female chameleon‘s first wellness exam. Her belly was large we felt round masses within. An ultrasound confirmed these were follicles (pre-eggs) so, we discussed bringing her in for a spay before they fully form.
🥚 She was brought in today for her spay and we found 27 eggs! Her ovaries and oviducts were removed along with the eggs to prevent any further egg-binding or reproductive issues. She did very well for this procedure and a full recovery is expected.
Our friend Joe. We love Joe. 🐾🤍

❤️🩹 Phantom is the sweetest 17 year old ring-tailed lemur. In his old age, he’s having issues with his liver and so needs to be hospitalized for a few days. He’s already improving with supportive care and medications (and his stuffed mini lemur by his side.)

Today is National Check The Chip Day! It's a reminder to all pet owners of the importance of microchipping their beloved pets — and to make sure each pet's microchip information is up-to-date. In the event a pet is lost or stolen, a microchip greatly increases the chance that they will be reunited with their family, but a microchip only works if its registration information is accurate!
We recently had two blue-tongued skinks here at the same time! Both 4 years old, big and beautiful. Their most distinctive feature is their vibrant blue tongues which they evolved as a defense mechanism. When threatened, they open their mouths wide and stick out their tongue to scare predators to mimic the appearance of a venomous snake.
There are a few different species in the wild - all native to Australia and New Guinea. In captivity, they can live for 15-20 years. We love how diverse pet ownership can be!
A sweetheart Dutch bunny boarding with us 🐰🤎
This is Joey. Joey first presented to us in May with an extremely high fever, depression, and lethargy. He needed intensive supportive care - antibiotics, pain meds, GI meds, iron, vitamins, fluids and was hospitalized for days.
We immediately suspected Joey had Disseminated Idiopathic Myofascitis (DIM) - a severe, painful, life threatening inflammatory syndrome only seen in young ferrets with very little research and known effective treatment plans. His bloodwork was consistent with this disease.
Our team read up on the literature and began with a treatment plan that has been effective in some patients previously. This, combined with our expertise, dedicated owners, and many follow up appointments… we are ecstatic to report Joey is THRIVING! 😊
This Indian star tortoise came to see us for a little wound care after an accidental dog bite. Popular in the pet trade, this species is found across central/southern India and Sri Lanka. The patient presented a good example of what minor shell “pyramiding” can look like.
Pyramiding is abnormal and described as excessive upward growth of the scutes - the individual segments of the shell. Shell deformities can interfere with lung function, weak legs leading to abnormal gait, spinal cord changes.
What causes pyramiding? Many factors such as low humidity, excess protein or fat in the diet, lack of UVB lighting, and calcium/phosphorus imbalance. If you see this in your tortoise, talk to a qualified veterinarian near you!
Leopard gecko came in to see us after he ended up in a sticky situation. He’s doing great after the removal! ゚viral
Ever wondered why parrots seem to like spicy foods? 🌶️ Parrots, like many birds, lack the receptors for capsaicin, the compound that makes peppers spicy. They don’t actually experience the burning sensation that humans do. Instead, they are attracted to the physical sensation of the tingle. This cockatoo loves her chili peppers! ❤️
STORM UPDATE! Closing a little early today - we plan to be back for normal business hours tomorrow but will keep you all updated. Everyone stay safe out there!
Why do we encourage preventive care? So we can catch issues of concern as early as possible, and take action to resolve them. Take a look at this case, which shows that trouble can start surprisingly early! WARNING: surgery ⚠️🦔
This 5 month old hedgehog presented for bloody vulvar discharge. without imaging it was not clear if the blood was coming from the reproductive or urinary tract, so we took a two-pronged approach: started on an antibiotic and scheduled her spay. it turns out the blood was coming from her uterus - likely a tumor. she did very well for her procedure and her symptoms should resolve!
What *business* do these ferrets have in our clinic? 💼
This business of five year old ferrets all have suspected or diagnosed adrenal disease. This is something we see very often. Ferret adrenal disease can cause hair loss, itchiness, and more sinister internal health threats such as loss of muscle mass, anemia, etc.
This disease does require medical management - removing the adrenal glands entirely isn’t necessarily recommended so we use an annual implant in these patients which controls their hormone production and in turn keeps clinical signs under control. As most do, these patients did very well and will be back next year!
We don’t usually see cats or dogs around here, but this special girl is Jules. Jules is a star. 💫
Sometimes, exotic vet medicine requires a little imagination and innovation.🥤
This royal tern presented from with an open fracture of the left humerus. We didn’t have anything to stabilize the pins quite the size we needed, so we used Katie’s (sanitized) plastic drinking straw from to place the epoxy!
7 year old male iguana hanging out with Katie during boarding. Not all iguanas have such a sweet and outgoing personality, but this guy loved spending time with us! He is a very spoiled boy with baths, a humidifier, and even his own facial steamer.
We absolutely ❤️ to see pets for their wellness and preventative care exams here. If your pet is up-to-date, you too could enjoy the convenience and peace of mind boarding with Exotic Vet Care can provide.
A common pet reptile, reticulated pythons lives in the rainforests of southern asia. Snakes do not possess blue or green pigments, scales have an iridescent appearance due to iridocytes (pigment cells) in their skin. One of the largest snakes in the world and regularly growing to lengths of over 16 feet, their pattern is a complex diamond-shape as “reticulate” means network. They can live to be 20 years old and even beyond.

One of our precious rat patients. 💛
He came in recently in bad need for a tooth trim. Rodents teeth grow constantly and throughout their lives. When they have an issue with filing the teeth down naturally, whether the cause is inappropriate diet or a genetic predisposition, they must be trimmed regularly to maintain a good quality of life. We see this in small mammals very often.
The Duck Days Are *NOT* Over here at Exotic Vet Care!
The power of preventative care! This is TOBY. 🐰
Toby is over 14 years old and an amazing example of preventative care, long term and dedicated veterinary maintenance. His owner has been bringing him to us since he was just a baby and kept up to date with all 6 month physicals and bloodwork - helping us know his normal levels intimately so change is detected and noticed easily.
They have utilized our CT machine to help catch degenerative change and disease early. This contributed to the diagnosis of arthritis, for which this client utilizes our discounted laser packages to have sessions every few days. The results have been phenomenal!
With devotion, a specialized treatment plan, and a little gene pool luck, your bunny may last this long too!
This is a little 2 month old presented for walking funny. The owners have had other peachicks that never make it much past this age, so we suspect a dietary/nutrition deficiency (or parasites infecting the flock). We gave peafowl diet recommendations so hopefully we can keep the new babies healthy. For any animal, poultry included, during the first few weeks of life they require a very nutrient dense diet with lots of protein. This is vital for all organ/bone development.
For this little one, we started with multivitamin injections and are going to try bandaging to keep his legs up in a better position. Check out our instagram for a video of us testing it out. Our doctors consulted with each other to come up with the best plan. He certainly had a few rough days getting used to it, but update from the farm is he’s doing really well! 🦚

Regular wellness exams are vital to monitor and maintain your pet's health. We recommend a postpurchase consultation as soon as possible after bringing a new pet into the home so that we can ensure that you are providing your new family member with the proper diet, care, and habitat.
Often, owners wait until there is a visible issue of concern before bringing their pet for a checkup. Avian and exotic pets are innately skilled at hiding any signs of illness or weakness until they have depleted their bodies' resources and are gravely ill. Regular wellness exams allow us to note any change in weight, behavior or condition and to correct problems before they become life-threatening. Regular bloodwork, radiographs and other diagnostics allow us to monitor the internal organs to ensure that they are functioning properly and to detect illness well before external symptoms manifest.
In addition to annual and 6-month physical exams, we offer behavioral consultation for pets that are having issues such as screaming, biting, or aggressive, defensive or antisocial behaviors. We offer prepurchase consultations to ensure that you are selecting the right kind of pet for you, your family, and your situation.
