Given the introduction of our newest Good Life Experience practitioner, Paul Ciacci, LMT. and his offer of 20 minute post- workout massages to our members after a Pilates or Yoga session, this blog post will be dedicated to the understanding of what a medical massage is and its benefits.

Medical massages are essentially based on results, it concentrates on medical necessity including stress reduction and relaxation. It is most frequently used to aid in health issues, manage pain, lower inflammation, boost circulation, alleviate nerve compression, enhance flexibility, and promote digestion (AIAM). Medical massages differ greatly from traditional ones that primarily focus on relaxation and stress reduction.
Medical massage includes techniques from Swedish massage, Traditional Chinese medicine, and physical therapy, these techniques reward clients with many benefits. Swedish massage techniques include the use of gentle to medium pressure on clients muscles, ligaments, and tendons- such pressure and gliding strokes promotes blood flow and circulation. Traditional Chinese Medicine focuses on the body’s energy flow, restoring it by using traditional pressure, movement, and manipulation techniques. Physical therapy is a technique that is frequently used to treat chronic conditions.

Medical massages come with many benefits that are now provided by our practitioner Paul Ciacci. With the offer of our 20 minute post-workout massages to members, you may truly know what it means to live “the good life”. Non-members can gain such benefits with an intro package of one 60 minute massage for $120 and three 60 minute massages for $260.

Blog post includes information from the American Institute of Alternative Medicine.

Has the change in weather and lack of sunlight got you feeling down? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Seasonal depression is a real issue that affects everyone no matter the circumstance. Around 5% of adults in the United States experience seasonal depression. It often starts in young adulthood, affecting people from the age range of 18-30. These depressive episodes mostly affect women more than men, as well as college students.

Seasonal depression, often called seasonal affective disorder (SAD), is a common type of depression that is triggered by the change of seasons, a lot of the time being triggered around late fall- winter. The winter depression that applies to the weather currently, includes symptoms of sadness, lack of energy, loss of interest in usual activities, weight gain, and oversleeping.

A specific cause for seasonal depression is unknown, but a couple of factors that may contribute to it would be your circadian rhythm, serotonin levels, and melatonin levels.

The best way to fight seasonal depression is not only with light therapy, but with exercise Pilates is a great form. Studies have found that in the fight of preventing depression, the best tactic is to do at least 15 minutes a day of a higher-intensity exercise. Pilates Mat Classes can last from 15 minutes- 60 minutes, allowing participants to gain core strength, coordination, balance, flexibility, pain relief, etc. At Good Life Experience Pilates, we provide in-studio and virtual classes with our highly trained instructors, Mila and Cheryl Smith (founder) for $25/ per class and $199 for monthly unlimited classes. If you are interested in trying Pilates to fight your seasonal depression, contact us to register at 914-487-3453 or [email protected].

What is mindful eating? Mindful eating is one of the various approaches to eating that promotes awareness of the food we consume. It allows us to be mindful of our hunger cues and relationship with food. This method of consumption and thinking can change our eating behaviors and reduce the stress related to eating. Now that we have a clear idea of what mindful eating is, let's discuss the four primary ways that mindful eating is practiced: (Healthline, 2023)

Eating slowly and without distraction.

Removing distractions such as your phone, tv, or laptop can allow for your brain to process the food you’re consuming. When a person takes time to sit down and eat in silence they are less prone to eating more than they need or want.

Listening to your body when you're hungry, and eating until you are full.

For most people it is difficult to identify when you're full, so try practicing chewing/ eating slowly and waiting a while before getting seconds of a meal. Try to listen to your hunger and eat intuitively.

Distinguishing between fake hunger [boredom] and real hunger.

Real hunger comes from the true need of food, anything that can fill your hunger and nutrition requirements. Fake hunger is more of an emotional form of eating, either brought on by boredom or stress, making you crave foods that are more high in sugar or fat.

Learn to cope with food guilt and anxiety.

Food guilt is brought on by unnecessary stress over food. Once a healthy relationship with food is built, consumption of meals in the future will be more intuitive.
