How is time travel even an actual thing? And don’t you need a time machine or something? We were literally in a museum looking at a replica of a promenade deck a few minutes ago. It’s too much of a coincidence that we were at the Titanic museum and then ended up aboard the Titanic.

“This is nice. I like this version of the afterlife,” I say, looking up to the beautiful woman. She acknowledges me with a brilliant smile.
“Death should not be a somber affair. Of course, it’s sad, but it’s just a part of life and there’s no escaping it. We should celebrate that our loved ones get to go onto the next step in their existence like we would if they got a great new job and had to move away. I know it’s not exactly the same and the pain of loss will always be there, but our state of mind can lessen the pain,” Mictecacihuatl says.

I shiver as I remember passing the Fields of Punishment with Hades and hearing those screams. I’m sure they feel pain and fear, but it must be warranted.
“You know, I am not worshiped anymore but I’m not forgotten either. As long as we are remembered by those who come after us, we live on forever. After their loved ones die, most people who choose to stay here are forgotten to the passing years, they can’t cross the bridge anymore, but that doesn’t mean they cease to exist. They just go find their slice of eternity,” the Lady of the Dead explains.

“Would I go back knowing everything I know now?” I ask. Yama shakes his head.
“As soon as you’re born, you will forget everything about your previous lives. You will not remember your past parents, people, or the life you led. It will always be there in your subconscious mind, but you won’t be able to access it.”
I contemplate that. Do I want to forget my mom and dad or Mia and Wyatt or any of the incredible things I did in my brief life? Admittedly, I didn’t do many, but there were some memorable moments I know I don’t want to forget.
“How would I know to live a better life?” I ask.
“You wouldn’t. If your nature is to be good, you will be. Maybe you would do more in the next life. Make a bigger difference. That’s the nurture part of it. That is what reincarnation gives you: the chance to live a better life than the one before,” Yama says.

“Walk with me,” Hades says, leading me to the foyer of his palace. He lifts a hand and the front doors open without a touch. We’re back to where I came through, standing in a stone cavern with dirt underfoot. Beyond us, I can see a cobbled path made of black stones. Hades walks towards it and I follow, not wanting to be left alone in this place.
“You know the Underworld is not actually under Earth or anything. Heaven is not above. Everything in the afterlife is on the same plane of existence which is separate from the plane of the living.”
“I wonder why it’s always depicted that way,” I reply. Hades shrugs.
“Who knows? Dante’s Divine Comedy might have something to do with it. In the beginning, you’re journeying in a straight line. When you exit the Hall of Judgement, the path forks. One door leads to punishment, one door leads here. This is just the next stop on your way to truth,” Hades responds.
“What comes next? I really thought I’d go straight to Heaven or Asphodel after Judgement. I didn’t realize it would be so much of a trek,” I say.
“You are promised the truth after you die. You are promised that everything you ever questioned during your life will be answered and so it will be, but not by me. I cannot answer every question of the universe, nor could Death or Osiris,” Hades replies.
“Are you leading me to the next step, then?” I ask. Hades nods and we walk on.

“Welcome to my hall, Jackson Myles,” Osiris says. His voice is deep and reverberates around the cavern. He is speaking Ancient Egyptian, but I understand him perfectly. Apparently there are no language barriers in the afterlife. How cool is that?
“Hi,” I reply nervously as I shift from foot to foot. I’m kind of afraid to walk near him and the scale.
“Do you know where you are?” Osiris asks. I nod, trying to swallow the lump in my throat.
“The Hall of Judgment,” I say, thickly. Osiris inclines his head with a warm smile on his face.
“Or the Hall of Two Truths, if you prefer,” Osiris responds.
“Can I ask why I’m here. I’m not Egyptian.”
“All the different stories about Judgment are basically the same. All that differs is who makes the call. For Christians, it’s Jesus, for Egyptians, it’s me, for the Hindu, it’s Yama. The process is basically the same and only differs based on what people believed when they were alive,” Osiris replies.
“I don’t know what I believed when I was alive,” I say. Osiris smiles again.
“That is why you see me. You are seeing the truest form of the Judgment. Each religion has formed their own version. For those who have no religion, they see me. They see the absolute truth.”
“What truth is that?” I ask.
“You met Death and Charon. The Grim Reaper comes from one belief system, Charon comes from the Greeks, and I am Egyptian. All religions, all deities work to the same goal. They all exist simultaneously in the world. Someone without a particular belief system sees us all as we are.”
“Why would a Christian only see God if you are the truth?” I ask, still confused. Wouldn’t people want to know the truth? Isn’t that what’s offered at death, answers to all the questions you had?
“Would it not be jarring for someone who believes only God and Heaven exist their entire lives with absolute faith to see me whom they’ve cast off as myth? The afterlife is not meant to be cruel except to those who truly deserve it,” Osiris explains.

“Who are you?”

“Yeah, I know. I guess I’m asking what’s the point of you being here,” I say. Immediately, I feel bad. I hope Death isn’t offended.
“Would you prefer to make this journey on your own? Death may be a solitary event, but that doesn’t mean you have to take the journey to the afterlife alone.”
I don’t know how it’s possible to feel comforted by Death and his creepy skeletal voice, but I do. This is not something I would have wanted to do on my own.
“Thank you for coming with me,” I say looking up at him.
“I walk with everyone. I offer my elbow to the elderly. I carry the children. I walk with the poorest of people and the kings and queens of the Earth. In death, everyone is equal,” Death rasps.
