On the 11th day of the 11th month, we honor our veterans. One day is not nearly enough to thank them for the sacrifices they made in the name of our freedom. They left the comfort of home, the safety of their families to live in uncomfortable, unsafe situations and I don’t know any veteran who is comfortable with someone thanking them, but do it anyway. Thank them. Hug their necks. Buy them a meal. Pray for their mental health. Show your appreciation every day, but especially today.

On a recent episode of the NFPA Podcast, the guest discussed the safety of short-term vacation rentals. He went so far as to say that statistically short-terms rentals are "the most dangerous sector of travel in the hospitality sector."

He went on to say that they are more dangerous than cruise ships, trains, commercial airlines and hotels.

Why?

Well, most municipalities do not have any safety regulations for short-term rentals meaning that the owners of these properties have little to no oversite or incentive to ensure their renters are staying in a safe and hazard free home.

Here are some things to consider when looking at a short-term rental for your next vacation or weekend getaway.

Does the home have a first aid kit?

Are smoke and carbon monoxide detectors located throughout the home? Are they hardwired or battery operated? If batteries, how often are they changed and are they checked between rentals to make sure a previous guest did not remove the batteries?

Are fire extinguishers in the home and is their location clearly marked?

Does the home have a sprinkler system?

Is a fire escape plan available?

Does the home have a deck? Are deck codes established in that area? How often is the deck inspected?

Does the home have a residential elevator? What are the inspection codes and has it been inspected?

Are safety inspections conducted between rentals?

Short-term rentals are rapidly growing in popularity and until safety regulations are well established in the industry it is up to you, the renter, to make sure your short-term rental is a safe space.

Independence Day can be very stressful for our pets. Many are frightened by fireworks and run off. In fact, this happens so often that many animal shelters have more intakes on July 5 and 6 than any other days of the year?

Here are some tips to keep your pets safe during fireworks season.

Make sure your pet’s collar has an ID tag with your pet’s name and your contact information.

If your pets are microchipped, make sure your contact information on file is up to date.

You can also write your name and phone number on your pet’s collar with a sharpie.

Bring pets inside. Even a pet that wouldn’t typically jump a fence whether physical or in ground could jump one and run off when frightened.

Create a safe space in your home for your pets like a kennel or a secure room. It might also help if you sit with them.

Thundershirts are helpful and can be found at your local pet store.

Speak to your vet about any supplements that might help calm your pets.

We hope you have a great weekend filled with fun, family and happy fur babies.

Sometimes the terminology is confusing and customers aren’t sure if their extinguisher needs an annual inspection or if it needs to be recharged.

The extinguisher on the left has a gauge that is in the green. That means that this extinguisher is fully charged and ready to use. The tag will indicate the date of the last inspection. If it’s been a year, it’s time to do it again.

The extinguisher on the right has a gauge that is outside of the green and indicates that the extinguisher needs to be recharged. This means the extinguisher has been used or something has occurred that caused the nitrogen to leak down. Until this extinguisher is recharged, it is useless in the event of a fire.

It’s a good idea to check extinguishers in your office or your home once a month to make sure those gauges are in the green and your extinguisher is ready should you need it.

Give us a call if you have questions, need an inspection or a recharge.
