This iconic Rock City barn is near the entrance to our cabin. www.creekfromtcabin.net

It was once called advertising, but if a Rock City barn survives long enough it becomes a cherished piece of Americana. Cherokee County has had a couple, one in Topton that is so faded it is almost impossible to read the lettering. The other is 13 miles west of Murphy on U.S. 64 near Sunny Point Road. That barn was one of only 70 surviving examples that were still maintained by Rock City, but that local landmark may soon join the 800-plus Rock City barns that have succumbed to the years. Frodoe? Glacier National Park is at its most beautiful during the winter. If you’re quiet, you may catch a glimpse of the ever-present wildlife. Snowshoe hares, deer, elk, and chipmunks do not hibernate and can often be easily seen against a snowy landscape. For real doe, what’s this deer doing? Probably wondering what you’re doing. Also, looking for second breakfast. Usually, deer can comfortably survive the winter by eating their usual diet of twigs, stems, grasses, and other plants wherever they typically would find them, even in the snow.

This happened in North Carolina 119 years ago today!

Today we celebrate ! On December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright made their first successful powered flight in a heavier-than-air craft. Kill Devil Hill on North Carolina's Outer Banks provided the perfect location for this moment that changed the world.

The steady winds and gently sloping dunes of soft sand on North Carolina's Outer Banks have been attracting soaring pilots since the early 20th century. The Wright brothers flew many pioneering glider flights at Kitty Hawk between 1900 and 1903 with Orville Wright returning to set a 9 minute 45 second soaring record there in 1911. The area again achieved soaring fame when Francis Rogallo and others introduced hang gliding in the 1970s. These same coastal winds and dunes continue to bring pilots from around the world to soar Jockey's Ridge today.
