We used to only have to deal with what are commonly known as "sugar ants" in California. And while these ants can be a major nuisance, at least they are not actually dangerous. Then came the red imported fire ant. These ants are native to South America and were introduced into Alabama in the 1930s before spreading to other parts of the U.S. Here in California, we were lucky enough to not be hit with an invasion until the late 1990s and those colonies were mostly in Fresno area. Unfortunately this invasive species is very persistent and more colonies are being found in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The California Department of Food and Agricultures states that, "This ant is expected to colonize all irrigated agricultural areas and lawns in California" (https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/plant/pdep/target_pest_disease_profiles/rifa_profile.html). Because these ants are relatively new to our area, many people may not be able to recognize red imported fire ants and protect themselves from the dangers they pose. Their mounds can be quite large, up to 18 inches in height and 24 inches in diameter, which can cause people to confuse them for gopher mounds. But RIFA mounds will appear more pebbly in texture as the ants are pushing up smaller amounts of dirt than gophers are. If you find a RIFA mound, do not disturb it as this can cause the ants to emerge and sting. While most people will be able to recover from the pain within a few hours, .02% of the population can suffer an allergic reaction to the ants' venom. This is where it pays to have a professional come and take care of the job rather than having to put yourself in harm's way. Give us a call at 951-461-8889 or go to bullseyepest.com if you need help with fire ants.

Mosquitoes are literally the worst. While many insects can serve beneficial purposes, we cannot think of anything good mosquitoes do for us. And with the invasive aedes mosquito spreading in Southern California we get more and more calls for mosquitoes every year. Unfortunately with this year's rainfall we expect that trend to continue. Mosquitoes will require more specialized treatments to target the areas where mosquitoes will like to rest: The underside of leaves. And while we will not be able to fully eliminate them until a way is developed to zap them out of the air, we can greatly reduce their numbers. And just like a good skincare routine, mosquito control gets better the longer and more consistent you use it. So if you're already on our perimeter pest treatments and wanting to avoid mosquitoes this year, get started now before the populations have a chance to skyrocket.

We can all be thankful that earwigs do not actually crawl inside anyone’s ears while they sleep. At the same time, that doesn’t mean that they’re any less creepy when spotted inside your home. Earwigs, also commonly known as pincher bugs (But again, no actual pinching), are common spring and fall time pests. They love moisture and are often found near areas where water collects as well as beneath dead vegetation. If you are like us and don’t want to see them around your home, give us a call at 951-461-8889 or go to www.bullseyepest.com

One of the worst possible pests to have within the home are fleas. Close behind them would be a pest that you think is a flea but actually isn’t, because you still feel like you could be getting attacked by bug bites. That sums up what it’s like to have an infestation of springtails. These tiny bugs can be seen by the thousands after it begins to warm up after springtime rains. They can jump up to 100 times their body height which when combined with their small size can result with them being confused with fleas. You don’t have to be worried about springtails biting though, they instead like to eat mold and fungus. You will usually find them in areas of high humidity. And while you don’t have to fear the bite of a flea, springtails are a major nuisance as their populations can be massive. If you’ve tried getting them out of your house to no avail, it is probably because their reproductive capacity is overpowering your efforts. That’s what we’re here for. Give us a call at 951-461-8889 or go to www.bullseyepest.com to book an appointment.

We often are asked, "Are brown widows worse than black widows?" The answer is both yes and no. Brown widows are not native to California and their populations have been growing since they were first discovered here in 2003. While they are less likely to bite, they are able to reproduce faster: A brown widow egg sack will contain up to 150 individual eggs and it's not uncommon for us to find clutches of 5+ egg sacks. The black widow will typically only have one egg sack with up to 300 eggs. The most troublesome thing about brown widows is that they frequently build webs beneath patio furniture which most of our customers find too close for comfort. You can discourage brown widows by sweeping up their webs with a broom or vacuuming them up. Of course, you can always call on us to do the dirty work at 951-461-8889 or www.bullseyepest.com

Every single year without fail, our office receives calls about these massive mosquitoes flying around. And while these guys are imposing, easily reaching lengths of 2 inches, what you see here is not actually a mosquito. It's a crane fly. Unlike mosquitoes, the crane fly is incapable of biting. You will often see them after our spring rains and when the temperatures begin to warm above 70 degrees. The adults will only live for a few weeks and their main job is simply to reproduce in order to ensure the next generation.
True mosquitoes are much smaller, usually between 1/8-1/2 inches in length. Their small size is what allows them to remain undetected before bites. Carpet beetles are small occasional invaders that we see most often during the spring and fall in Southern California. They naturally live on the outside of the home and will feed off a variety of plant materials. Once inside they can survive off a variety of food sources, including organic fabrics which is where they get their common name. Changes in weather can drive them indoors, which is why you may have begun to see more with the recent rains and warming temperatures. If you’ve seen more inside than you care to, call us at 877-466-2687 or visit us at www.bullseyepest.com
While most cases of carpet beetles are merely a nuisance, with the right conditions they’re populations can become massive (Picture in comments)
