Tips to Save at the Pump
1. Buy gas early or late in the day. Gas is cooler earlier in the day and is denser. As the temperature rises the gas density falls and you will get less when you pump the hotter it is.
2. Slow Down. Manage your speed and drive steadily. Driving fast increases drag, which increases fuel consumption.
3. Monitor when and how you brake – braking excessively waste gas.
4. Turn off your engine. Turn off your vehicle when you’re waiting. Excess idling is a major waste of gas.
5. Loose some weight. Eliminate excess weight in your vehicle. Unnecessary weight causes your vehicle to work harder.
6. Don’t wait until your tank is almost empty to fill up. You’ll be stuck paying for whatever gas you can find nearby.
7. Monitor your tires. Under-inflated tires tend to wear our quicker and can waste gas.
8. Tune your engine. A properly tuned engine uses less fuel and will run much more efficiently.
9. Change your vehicle’s filters. Oil, air, and fuel filters need to be cleaned / changed according to the manufacture’s recommendations. Clean filters will keep your vehicle running more fuel efficiently.
10. Use the correct motor oil. Using the wrong motor oil can cause the engine to work harder and waste fuel. Check with the manufacturer’s recommendations for the correct motor oil. If you are unsure, ask us.
11. Turn off the A/C. Don’t use the A/C unless needed.
12. Choose the best route. Use the route with the least stops.
13. Download a gas app. Using an app can help you save money at the pump.

FOLLOW THESE TIRE SAFETY AND MAINTENANCE TIPS FROM AAA.COM
Understanding Your Vehicle’s Tires
Your tires are the only part of the car that has direct contact with the road. Tires affect your vehicle handling, ride, braking, and safety. For optimum performance, tires must have the correct air pressure, tread depth, balance and the wheels of the vehicle must be properly aligned.
Checking your tires on a regular basis is an important step in protecting your safety and your automotive investment. Ideally, tire inspections should be performed monthly. If you drive over potholes and debris in the road, live in a cold climate, or drive long distances regularly, then you should inspect your tires more often.
Always inspect your tires before a long trip. The more often these inspections are performed, the easier it will be to find a small problem, such as a nail in your tire, and fix it before it becomes a more expensive and time-consuming issue.
If you need help determining if your tires need maintenance or replaced, let 6 Shooter Auto Repair take a look. We can also order tires for you, often cheaper than your local tire store.
LOOK FOR SIGNS OF WEAR
Poor tire maintenance can lead to premature tire wear, a flat tire or even a blowout. Factors other than tires themselves also can affect tire wear. Worn suspension parts and wheel alignment both play a direct role in tire wear and performance.
Tire Problems to Look For During a Visual Inspection
• Over inflation: Too much air pressure causes mostly the tire’s middle section to contact the road. This creates wear primarily in the center of the tread, with less wear at the tire’s edges.
• Under inflation: Too little air pressure causes mostly the tire’s outer edges to contact the road. This creates wear primarily on both edges of the tire tread, with less wear in the center.
• Tread wear on one edge of the tire: This typically occurs when the wheels are out of alignment.
• Erratic tread wear: This is often called cupping, and may mean the wheel is out of balance, or that the shock absorbers or other suspension components need to be replaced.
• Raised portion of the tread or sidewall: May indicate that one of the belts in the tire carcass has separated from those next to it.
Tire Problems to Look for While Driving
• Unusual vibration or thumping noise: Vibration or thumping noises can indicate an out-of-balance tire, one with tread that has a flat spot due to locking the wheels in a panic stop, or a tire with a separated belt.
• A pull to one side: While driving at a steady speed, pulling to one side may indicate an underinflated or damaged tire on the side of the car to which the vehicle pulls. If this is not the case, a brake problem or poor wheel alignment may be causing the pull.
TIRE TREAD INSPECTION
Tires depend on good tread condition depth to maintain traction and to shed water on wet roads. The tread should be checked at least once a month for excessive and uneven wear. The most accurate tread depth measurements are made with a simple tread depth gauge available at any parts store. Or ask us at 6 Shooter Auto Repair to take a look.
TIRE MAINTANCE
Tire Rotation
To gain maximum life and performance from your tires, it is essential to rotate your vehicle’s tires. Refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for mileage recommendations. Usually tire rotation is performed between 5,000 and 7,000 miles.
Tire Balancing
Properly balanced tires help minimize uneven wear and extend their life.
Wheel Alignment
Wheel alignment is the measurement of the position of the wheels compared to specifications that the vehicle manufacturers recommend. Each vehicle has specific wheel alignment settings. If any alignment measurement falls outside the specified range, uneven tire wear can result, vehicle handling may be affected and fuel economy can be diminished.
Spending a few minutes with your tires every month can help protect your family, improve your vehicle’s performance, and lengthen the life of your tires.
If you’re unsure, let us take a look and make sure your tires are safe!

The general rule of thumb for deciphering how many keys is too many keys is that six keys are usually the limit. When talking about putting stress on your ignition switch and engine, it’s always best to use extreme caution. The excessive weight of more than six keys causes a downward pull on the ignition switch – this wears the system out prematurely and eventually leads to other issues. While your vehicle endures added stress, your keys can also take the brunt of the stress – too much weight can wear them out just as quickly as your ignition switch.
According to AAA.com here are some tips to determine if you need to replace your battery.
Time
Like people, car batteries age over time and have a finite lifespan. Even in ideal operating conditions, batteries gradually deteriorate until they can no longer provide enough power to start an engine. Automobile usage patterns also contribute to battery aging. Cars driven mostly on short trips may not allow the battery to fully recharge, and batteries in vehicles parked for extended periods naturally self-discharge. In both of these situations, using a maintenance charger like AAA’s Battery Tender will keep the battery fully charged and extend its service life.
Heat
Heat facilitates the chemical reaction batteries use to generate electricity, but it also increases the rate of battery degradation. In cooler northern climates, a battery may last five years or longer, but in hot southern locales around three years is more typical. Batteries also live in a harsh underhood environment where temperatures can easily exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit in hot weather. To combat this heat, automakers may mount the battery in an isolated area, install a heat shield over the battery, or relocate the battery outside the engine compartment, often under the back seat or trunk floor.
Vibration
The last key factor in battery life is vibration, which causes physical breakdown of internal battery parts. To minimize the effects of vibration, special hold down hardware secures batteries in place and prevents them from moving about. Missing or loose hold downs can significantly shorten battery life.
Other Considerations
While less common than the factors above, a malfunctioning charging system will also reduce battery life. Persistent under- or over-charging accelerates battery aging. Some newer cars with absorbent glass mat (AGM) batteries require careful control of charging rates for maximum battery life, and the automaker may even alter the charging strategy as the battery ages. Finally, allowing any car battery to go completely dead will take a big chunk out of its lifespan, even if it can be recharged and put back in service.
Weak Battery Warning Signs
You may have a battery problem if the starter motor cranks the engine slowly or the Battery/Charging warning lamp is illuminated. Another weak battery indicator on older cars is dim incandescent headlights, particularly at idle. However, not every failing battery reveals itself through obvious symptoms.
To avoid being stranded by a battery problem, have the battery inspected at every oil change to make sure the cable connections are clean and tight, and the hold down hardware is secure. Once a battery reaches three years of age, have it tested annually. The test will identify if the battery has deteriorated to the point where replacement is recommended to prevent an unexpected failure.
