How Did Ketchuptown Get Its Name and How to Pronounce Horry County

First, I know many of you are looking at each other thinking- Ketchuptown?!?! Ketchuptown is a historic unincorporated community, with an estimated population of 75 approximately 15 minutes from Galivants Ferry (A clue for a future article) in Horry County (Pronounced Or-ee). The name of the small community comes from a pun.

"I'll ketchup with you tomorrow."

In the 1920s, farmers would travel to the country store to “catch up” on the news. The daughter of Herbert “Hub” Small was obsessed with the letter K. She would often draw elaborate ‘K’s when she was in the store and wrote “Ketchuptown” repeatedly. It stuck, and the rest is history.
