SpaceX flight
20 years ago, I was in the lobby of the World Trade Center when the first plane hit the tower. I was practicing surgery in NYC at that time, and my usual route to work was through the lobby of the World Trade Center to get to work. That particular day, my plan was to take the day off and go fishing with my dad, but that changed when my surgical residents called me for an emergency endoscopic procedure, that they were unable to get anyone else to do.
I called my Dad, cancelled our fishing day and made my way into the city from NJ. I got on the 8:30am ferry from Liberty State Park and crossed the Hudson River, docking on the other side at the World Trade Center Marina. I remember looking at the water on the Hudson, sparkling as the sun hit it on that gorgeous day, and wishing I was fishing instead. I made my way through the large glass atrium of the World Financial Center and walked across the bridge that crossed the West Side Highway. I then got on the long escalator that took me into the lobby of the World Trade Tower.
As I walked pass the tower elevators, I was hit by a blast of hot air and subsonic vibration that caused me to lose my balance and fall over. Then I could hear people running and screaming. From the windows, I could see debris falling. I was terrified. I couldn’t imagine what could be creating such a disturbance. After getting up, I quickly ran back from where I had come. The only escalator going back to the bridge across the West Side Hwy, was packed with people fleeing as I was. I was so frightened and thinking something was going to catch up with me, that I ran up an escalator going in the wrong direction, just to get away. As I crossed the bridge crossing the West Side Hwy, I could see several people on fire running and flailing. I later figured out they had been doused with jet fuel as they were standing on the outside of the tower when the plane hit. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I eventually made my way back to the marina where I could get a good view of the tower. I could see it was damaged and smoking. I called my wife and she told me to get back on the ferry and come back home. Just then, I heard what sounded like a high pitched missile. I looked up and it was the second plane hitting the other tower. Again, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
Being a surgeon on staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital, the closest trauma center to the Towers, I began walking up the West Side Hwy, to make my way to St. Vincent’s Hospital. As I walked, I could see people jumping to their deaths from the Towers, a nauseating site. I finally got to St. Vincent’s Hospital, and most of the staff was out on 7th Avenue, looking directly downtown at both Towers engulfed in smoke. I began telling them the same story you are currently reading, and the first Tower fell. No one could believe what they were seeing. Then, shortly thereafter the second Tower fell.
All of us went back into the hospital to prepare for all the casualties we expected that were coming. We had IV bags hanging everywhere. All the ORs were cleared and prepared for trauma. All the surgeons were in scrubs and at the ready. CNN was on in the OR lounge and everyone was watching. We waited and waited and waited, throughout the day and night, and no one came. The only patients that came, were people covered in the plume from the towers falling, and the people who were burned from the jet fuel, who we sent to the burn center at Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx. The famous culinary institute (George Beard Society), directly across the street from St Vincent’s Hospital, sent over delicious gourmet food for the doctors and nurses. We all felt like we didn’t deserve it, as we had not saved a single life.
Eventually, we all came to the realization that no one would be coming, it was a horrible feeling. There was no one to help. We couldn’t do what we were trained to do, help people.
I thank God everyday to protect me, my family, and my patients, but on this day, I thank him for delivering safely from the Towers.
