There is so much research on the effectiveness of neuro and biofeedback. Here is a link to a recently compiled bibliography with all of the known research abstracts. It's fascinating that this self-regulation system has not made it into mainstream health care. Well, maybe it's not a surprise. Thank you to Daywaneti Phoebe and Dr. Kerson who put this immense resource together.

Verne et al (2003) reviewed the literature showing that there is both visceral and cutaneous hypersensitivity in irritable bowel syndrome. They have also demonstrated that fMRIs of the brains of people with irritable bowel syndrome are very different from those of controls in areas related to cognitive processing as well as pain. This coincides with Donaldson’s work combining EEG and peripheral biofeedback in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. For about 1/3 of the people with IBS, it is clearly caused and/or sustained virtually entirely by stress responses. Surveys of over 3,700 patients have shown that stress responses predict the onset of IBS (Nicholl et al (2008). Most of the remainder have disordered autonomic regulation patterns.

Stress related Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can be very effectively treated using behavioral interventions such as biofeedback, neurofeedback and cognitive therapy. Our clinic can provide all three interventions in a personalized approach.

We all must prepare for the mental health crisis bound to emerge from the pandemic by having more mental health resources readily available. One of those resources is Neurofeedback, which is a noninvasive treatment that focuses on training the brain.
