Since 2020 was the year of no-travel, we took a little trip this holiday season with our Winter Book Club. It was open to all students from grades 3 - 8, from across the country. The books discussed included The Giver, The Hate You Give, Wonder, Eleven Birthdays, Courage Has No Color, among several others. Children discussed characters and their arcs, explored connections with the stories, and agreed that reading as well as chatting about reading with friends was a fun activity.
Next week begins our Winter/Spring session, where we travel and explore the world through literature. Students would not only read authors from different continents, but also research about the various regions and learn about their cultures.
2020 has been a memorable year for all of us in many different ways. It has brought out the best and the worst in us: joy, despair, love, loss, anger, anxiety, and hope. But most of all, hope ā the one trait so fundamental to who we are as humans. Whether it is school re-openings, family holidays, loved onesā health, or vaccines, we are conditioned to believe things will change and the best is yet to come. Thatās why we celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, and wish each other the best for the future. It is also why we make new year resolutions.
As we start a new year and this new venture, we are filled with hope as well. So I'm sharing these wise words from Neil Gaiman -- ones that Iāve tried to carry with me every year, as I move from one to the next, and ones that I hope will continue to guide us this coming year.
Here's to a wonderful 2021 from our family to yours! May this new year bring more hope, more joy, and more love than ever.
