Coyote sightings are relatively common in Naperville. To stay safe, it's important to follow these tips.
Every year, Animal Control receives calls from residents about coyote sightings and concerns about coyote behavior. We encourage residents to learn more about coexisting with coyotes and understand that coyote behavior CAN be modified by humans.
Here are some tips to discourage the presence of coyotes:
❕ Do not feed wildlife.
❕ Limit food sources by keeping garbage containers closed, not overfilling bird feeders, keeping grills and barbeques clean, and cleaning up after fruit-bearing trees.
❕ Don’t leave pets outside unattended.
❕ Obey leash laws and keep pet food and water bowls indoors.
❕ Vary the time of day and route used for walking your pet.
❕ Seal crawl spaces or decks, porches and sheds with welded wire to discourage animals from building dens.
❕ Use motion sensor lights for front, back or side yards.
❕ Encourage your neighbors to practice these tips, too!
If a coyote encounter occurs:
❕ Stand your ground; don’t run
❕ Make loud noises; shout, blow a whistle, clap your hands, etc.
❕ Wave your arms or swing a walking stick
❕ Spray it with a garden hose or a water gun filled with vinegar water
