OH you wanted a quick lesson in TCM foundations?!

We got you. 🤝

But first, HAPPY SUMMER SOLSTICE! ☀️ Today marks the longest day and the shortest night; it’s the most yang day out of the whole year.

The moon 🌙 is yin, and the sun ☀️ is yang. Darkness is yin and brightness is yang. etc.. They cannot exist without each other.

The development of all phenomena in the universe is the result of the interplay of yin and yang; every phenomenon contains within itself both aspects in different degrees of manifestation. ☯️

In TCM theory, there are 8 trigrams which represent the combinations of yin and yang energies throughout the seasons.

Trigram 1 is Heaven (pictured above), consisting of three solid yang lines. Yang stands for heaven, light, and warmth. The trigram represents creativity, since Heaven is in ancient Chinese thought regarded as the origin of the world and the mightiest force in it. It also denotes the dry warming of the sun, and it suggests the male principle. Yang, yang, yang. 🔥

Yang is the principle of light and the heavenly, so it has to be represented in abundance in the trigram of Heaven. It’s the utmost yang.

The Ba Gua (slide 2) is a compilation of the 8 trigrams representing different stages of yin and yang within the universe. The broken lines within the Ba Gua are representations of yin energy as opposed to solid lines representing yang energy.

After the 8 trigrams were formed, they were combined to create the 64 I Ching hexagrams but that’s a story for another day. 🙂

A little refresher for those of you who enjoy connecting the dots … 👁️

“The organs weep the tears the eyes refuse to shed”

Any emotion in excess can affect its corresponding organ system. And the same is true for any emotions that are repressed.

In TCM, these are the emotions and their corresponding or affected organ systems:

❤️ Heart: lack of enthusiasm, restlessness, depression, insomnia

💛 Spleen: overthinking or dwelling too much on a particular topic

🖤 Kidney: fear, lack of willpower, insecure, isolation

🤍 Lungs: grief, sadness & detachment

💚 Liver: resentment, frustration, bitterness, and any type or outburst

You’re better off allowing your emotions to flow & always speaking your truth! 🗣️🗣️🗣️ Your body & organs will thank you. ☺️

Yang deficiency is a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that represents a lack of warmth, energy, and metabolic activity in the body.

In TCM, the body’s energy, or Qi, is divided into Yin and Yang energies. Yang energy is associated with warmth, activity, and transformation processes in the body. 🔥

When there is a deficiency of Yang, individuals may experience symptoms such as feeling cold, fatigue, weak digestion, cold limbs, frequent urination, low libido, and a pale complexion. ❄️

Factors such as chronic stress, overwork, poor diet, and exposure to cold environments can also deplete Yang energy in the body.

Treatment for Yang deficiency typically involves warming and nourishing the body through dietary changes, herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion (a technique that involves burning dried mugwort on specific points on the body), and lifestyle adjustments to support the body’s Yang energy and restore balance.

At acuworld, we’ve got the herbs on hand to help bring back balance between yin & yang.. feel free to reach out with any questions!

Yin Deficiency is a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that refers to a lack of the Yin energy in the body. In TCM, Yin and Yang are the two complementary energies that are believed to regulate all aspects of our health. ☯️

🌊 Yin represents the cooling, calming, and nourishing energy.

🔥 Yang represents the warming, activating, and moving energy.

When there is a deficiency of Yin, it means that the body’s cooling and nourishing mechanisms are compromised, leading to various symptoms.

Some common symptoms of Yin Deficiency include dryness of the skin, hair, and mouth, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, restlessness, anxiety, and irritability. Yin Deficiency can also affect the digestive system, causing constipation, bloating, and poor appetite.

In TCM, Yin Deficiency is often treated with acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary therapy. The goal of treatment is to nourish and replenish the Yin energy in the body, as well as to address any underlying imbalances that may have caused the deficiency.

In addition to consistent acupuncture, we love using .official herbal formulas “enrich” and “cool” to achieve balance between yin & yang energies.

If this sounds like you, DM us to see how we can help. 😊

The all-encompassing lesson in Traditional Chinese Medicine places emphasis on living a life harmonious to nature.

The body is seen as a microcosm of the natural world.

“As within, so without”

Winter, as a season, is considered to be a time of utmost yin energy, where the natural world is at its most dormant and still.

However, more often than not, we glorify being busy throughout the holiday season— which in our hemisphere, happens to fall in the winter months.

Consumerism has our nervous systems in a frequent state of fight or flight + urgency.

With holiday parties, family events & traveling, it’s no wonder our immune systems take a hit.

It’s not actually cold + flu season, our bodies are just meant to be rested more this time of year. (hard to swallow pill!)

Let’s embrace the stillness of winter.

Join us at 2pm on Sunday, December 17th to rest & restore.

& myself will guide you through a yin yoga practice, followed by acupuncture + sound healing.

all are welcome

❄️ 3 HERBS FOR WINTER ❄️

As always, my intention in sharing these with you is to teach more about TCM and herbal medicine.

ITS JUST FOR FUN!!! 🤩

TCM rarely prescribes single herbs. Almost all herbal prescriptions are in the form of an herbal formula containing multiple herbs that work synergistically with one another.

With that being said, I just want to show you some of the TCM herbs that you probably didn’t know you had in your pantry rn. 🤓

**It’s important to consult with a licensed TCM practitioner to provide you with safe and proper herbal formulas for your individual needs.

3 herbs in the TCM toolbox that are especially useful during cold/flu season you ask???🍊

Astragalus, ginseng & cinnamon twig are all useful to warm and boost the immune system this time of year. ❤️‍🔥

TCM rarely uses single herbs by themselves, usually just to add customization to a standard formula. Herbal formulas have been used for centuries and the combinations that exist are extremely well thought out and balanced. We carry many immune boosting formulas in the clinic! ☯️

Glass fire cupping and acupuncture are also effective & natural ways to boost your body’s immunity.

Don’t let cold & flu season get ya down 🤧 take preventative measures to stay ahead.

If you’re interested in herbalism to boost your immune system, or any other modality mentioned above - schedule an appointment with us on acuworldfl.com

Night sweats can be a disruptive and uncomfortable problem for many people, not just ✨women✨ going through ✨menopause✨.

night sweats ≠ menopause

But also normalize menopause and period blood and everything that society has conditioned us to think should be shameful, avoided or hidden.

Men are affected by night sweats too, because WHY??? because it has nothing to do with gender (🤓🧪🧐), in Chinese Medicine, night sweats are a symptom of yin deficiency.

Yin deficiency occurs when there’s an imbalance of yin and yang energies in the body.

Other common symptoms of yin deficiency are dry hair/skin/nails, insomnia, anxiety, restlessness, hot flashes and palpitations.

A yin deficiency can be caused by excessive heat, prolonged stress, overwork, and poor diet.

If you’re experiencing night sweats, don’t forget to mention it at your next acupuncture appointment (although I’ll 10000% ask) because this is something that acupuncture treats really well.

I’m continuously amazed by it, actually. 🥲

In TCM the season of autumn correlates with the lungs & large intestine. Here are a few tips to help your body with a smooth transition through the seasonal changes during fall.

1. DECLUTTER & LET GO… this may or may not include a haircut. 😂 We all know that the large intestine is responsible for “letting go” of 💩 every day. In letting go of clutter, old clothes that you never wear and dead/ split ends from summer, this helps to strengthen the energy of the large intestine.

2. Eat warm, white colored foods. As always in TCM it’s best to consume all foods slightly cooked so the digestion process is easier on the stomach. The color correlated with autumn is white, so incorporating foods that are white will ultimately help to nourish the lungs. Steamed 🍐s with 🍯 are 💯

3. The external pathogen were most susceptible to this time of year is dryness, so it’s extra important to stay hydrated on the inside & out. Eating soup & drinking bone broth is a great way to add extra warmth & hydration during fall.

4. The lungs clearly play a huge role in respiration but they are also said to open to the nose. Practicing breathwork esp. this time of year helps keep lungs strong. 🫁 💪🏾 Incorporate breathwork through the nose to add an extra layer to this practice.

5. Last but definitely not least, WEAR A SCARF!! 🧣 In TCM, it’s said that pathogens such as colds & flu enter into the body through the back of the neck. It’s especially important to keep it covered when you’re going outside into windy & cold weather. 🌬️

Hope this helps! Drop any questions in the comments ⬇️

Have you tried ear seeds yet?! 💎 V cute & fun accessories for your ear but more importantly, health!

Ear seeds are vaccaria seeds or 24K gold plated pellets on a sticker that is thoughtfully placed along different points of the ear to achieve a therapeutic effect.

The ear is a microsystem of the entire body, containing every organ system within it. This allows us to treat a wide variety of symptoms using only the ear. 👂🏾

Pictured above is a protocol to help boost fertility including:

💫 SHEN MEN: calms the mind & reduces stress/anxiety
💫 POINT ZERO: brings body to homeostasis
💫 UTERUS: treats any problem within the uterus. Not to be stimulated while pregnant as this point can induce labor.
💫 OVARIES/TESTES: treats impotence & gynecological disorders
💫 KIDNEY: balances blood pressure and supports reproductive health
💫 ADRENALS: regulates hormones, inflammation & menstrual cycles
💫 ENDOCRINE: balances hormones like progesterone/testosterone

At Acuworld we carry containing 24K gold pellets and Swarovski crystals. 🤑

Ear seeds can be added on to any service for an additional $10, just ask! 💫

🗣️ FYI FERTILITY IS A TEAM EFFORT 🗣️

It is NOT just a woman’s problem. Did you know that smoking pot makes a man’s s***m “lazy”? T’is true.

It is important to note that while ear seeds can complement other fertility treatments, they should not be used as a substitute for medical advice or treatment from a qualified healthcare professional. Always seek advice from an acupuncturist regarding proper use and placement of ear seeds.

Late summer is the season of transformation, where the warmth of summer is slowly replaced by the coolness of autumn. 🍃

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this is the time to focus on nourishing and balancing the spleen and stomach. ☯️

Three powerful herbs that can help support the body during this time are Yi Yi Ren, Shan Zha, and Huo Xiang.

🤎 YI YI REN also know as Coix Seed, is used to help drain dampness and strengthen the spleen.

🤎 SHAN ZHA, or Hawthorn Fruit, is used to aid digestion, regulate blood sugar, and improve cardiovascular health.

🤎 HUO XIANG, or Patchouli, is used to dispel dampness, calm the stomach, and relieve nausea.

By incorporating these herbs into your late summer routine, you can support your body’s natural balance and transition smoothly into the cooler months ahead.

If you’re interested in working with herbs please contact your local acupuncturist or a professional herbalist!

It’s that time again!!! We’re beginning the transition from heart energy (summer 🔥) to spleen energy (late-summer ⛈️).

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) associates the spleen & stomach with late-summer. As you know from a recent post, the organs correlate with the seasons and become susceptible to different types of illnesses at different times of the year. As we move into spleen/stomach season, we prioritize habits to keep these organs healthy and avoid illnesses related to late summer weather: dampness.

1. EAT WARM, COOKED FOODS: reduce iced beverages and cold/damp foods such as ice cream & salads this time of year as they can weaken the spleen and disrupt digestion.

2. STAY HYDRATED: this one’s a classic.. hydrate always. This is the perfect time to plug my fave brands that help me get enough water throughout the day.

3. PRACTICE MODERATION: Avoid late night snacking and over-consuming alcoholic beverages. Here’s something I found interesting as I was reading the Huang Di Nei Jing:

“If one overeats, the muscles & blood vessels of the stomach & intestines overexpand and suffer from food retention. This leads to dysentery and hemorrhoids. Overindulgence in alcohol causes the energy to rise to the head. If in*******se is attempted, the energy will not be in the right place and the kidney qi will be drained, causing damage and degeneration of the low back. When qi is not in the kidneys during s*x, the body will draw qi from the bones and marrow.” 🤓

4. EXERCISE REGULARLY: TCM suggests gentle exercises like walking, yoga & tai chi to support the spleen. These activities help support circulation, improve digestion and overall energy flow in the body.

5. GET ENOUGH REST: The spleen is associated with emotions of worry & overthinking, which can lead to insomnia & fatigue‼️ Getting enough rest, meditating and reducing stress can help optimize spleen function. How much rest is enough? The limit does not exist 💭 jk 8 hours is usually good.

Can’t sleep? Acupuncture can help with that. 🪡

Some TCM theory to start your week! 🤩

If you ever read through the entirety of my captions, let it be this one lol 🫶

TCM is big on relating human bodies to nature (10000% yes 💡). Each season throughout the year corresponds with a different organ system. 😇

This means that we are more susceptible to different imbalances throughout the year depending upon the season.

Below, are some insights(translations) from the Huang Di Nei Jing.. only the most important book about TCM written around 2600 BC 🫨

❤️‍🔥SUMMER is affected by heat: “In the summer the wind arises in the southern direction and affects the heart. To treat this, points on the chest and ribs should be employed.”

⛈️ LATE SUMMER is affected by dampness: “Late summer is the hinge between hot and cold seasons, uniting the yin and the yang. This transitional period will mainly affect the spleen, causing internal colds with diarrhea. Points in the midback can be used.”

🍂FALL is affected by dryness: “The westerly wind of antumn will affect the lungs, manifesting in malaria with alternating chills and fever. Points on the shoulders and upper back are useful in treatment.”

❄️ WINTER is affected by cold: “The northern winds of winter will affect the kidneys and limbs, manifesting in bi syndrome, a condition of obstruction of qi and blood, which typically results in stiffness, immobility, and pain in the joints. Acupuncture points on the lower back and buttocks can be used to treat this condition.”

🌷SPRING is affected by wind: "In the spring the wind comes from the east. Illness then occurs in the liver channel and rises to the head, causing bleeding from the nose. Acupuncture points on the neck and gallbladder channel shonld be used for treatment.”

The history of TCM is so crazy to me. Thousands of historical books have been burned in order to try and suppress this information. Grateful to help spread the word is an understatement. THANKS FOR READING!

We do tongue diagnosis every day in the clinic but did you know you can also diagnose by looking at the eyes, ears, face & even hands? 🙌🏽

There are a lot of microcosms within the body when it comes to TCM. As within, so without.

A microcosms is a small representative system having analogies to a larger system aka your entire body.

👁️ Spleen >> upper eyelid
👁️ Stomach >> lower eyelid
👁️ Liver >> iris
👁️ Kidneys >> pupil
👁️ Heart >> inner canthus
👁️ Lungs >> sclera

Here’s what different colors in your eyes could mean:

☁️ Dull/Clouded: mind disturbances
☁️ Redness: fire or excess heat
☁️ Pale white corners: blood deficiency
☁️ Yellow sclera: damp heat
☁️ Under eye swelling: kidney deficiency
☁️ Grey spots: qi stagnation
☁️ Black spots: qi & blood injuries
☁️ Red spiral veins: pain
