Gov. Ron DeSantis announced an award of $100 million to support beach nourishment projects within 16 coastal counties impacted by Hurricane Ian or Hurricane Nicole. On Dec. 16, DeSantis signed into law Senate Bill 4A, which allocated this funding to address coastal erosion resulting from these two back-to-back storm events. Distribution of the 2022 Special Session funding includes $23.1 million for Lee County beaches, $2.4 million for Collier County beaches and $1.3 million for Charlotte County beaches.

AVELO AIRLINES ANNOUNCES 3 NEW NONSTOP ROUTES FROM RSW
Avelo Airlines announced three new routes to Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina; Kalamazoo, Michigan and Lansing, Michigan from Southwest Florida International Airport. The new routes will operate on Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. These routes will bring Avelo’s total number of cities from RSW to four, joining an existing route to New Haven, Connecticut. The route to Raleigh-Durham International Airport will begin Nov. 10 with flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Flights to Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport will begin Nov. 11 on Mondays and Fridays, with a shift to Wednesdays and Saturdays starting Nov. 19. The route to Capital Regional International Airport in Lansing also will begin Nov. 11 on Mondays and Fridays.

COLLIER COUNTY RESIDENTS’ PURCHASING POWER AMONG HIGHEST IN FLORIDA
Collier County residents have the second-highest purchasing power among Florida’s 67 counties, according to a study by SmartAsset. The study identifies the places where average living expenses are most affordable for the people living there by calculating two different cost of living metrics for a household with one adult and no dependents. One reflected the baseline cost of living in each location and the other reflected expenditures typical to someone making the county’s median income. It calculated purchasing power in each county by determining the weighted cost of living as a percentage of per capita income. Collier, which ranked behind Indian River County, had a $48,877 average cost of living and a $103,865 per capita income, giving it a purchasing power index of 59.67%.

CONSTRUCTION FIRM FOR VANDERBILT BEACH ROAD EXTENSION APPROVED

The Collier County Board of Commissioners awarded a bid of just under $153 million to Sacyr Construction for the Vanderbilt Beach Road extension project. This 7-mile-long project, which has been in discussion by the county since 2006, will allow Vanderbilt Beach Road to extend from Collier Boulevard east to 16th Street Northeast. The plan shows a six-lane divided roadway, with an overall cost for the county being more than $216 million.

Housing inventory grows as interest rates scare off buyers

Following a two-year drought in housing inventory, the housing market is showing signs of replenishment, according to data published by Realtor.com.

The week ending July 2 saw the rate of new listings increase by 8% year-over-year. The rate of active inventory rose 29% above last year’s rate.

An increase in home listings is partially being driven by higher interest rates, which are discouraging potential buyers, Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com, said in a statement.

“More homeowners are taking advantage of still-strong housing market conditions just as higher mortgage rates and home prices are causing many buyers to reconsider their moving plans,” Hale said. “As a result, the number of homes for sale is climbing rapidly.”

COLLIER COUNTY SCHOOLS GET TOP MARKS FROM STATE
Collier County Public Schools received an A grade for the fifth consecutive year, according to Florida Department of Education grades for the 2021-2022 academic year. The 2021-2022 school grades mark the first full school grade data release since 2019 due to the lack of assessments in the 2019-2020 school year, mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the opt-in nature of the 2020-2021 school grades. Collier County schools are also tied for fifth overall in the state. Lee and Charlotte counties both received Bs from the state.

Florida is ranked the 14th best state for keeping total energy costs low in the U.S., according to a WalletHub study. WalletHub compared the total monthly energy bills in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Its analysis uses a formula that accounts for residential energy types like electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating oil. Florida had an average total energy cost of $445, a monthly average electricity cost of $158, a monthly average natural gas cost of $82, a monthly average motor fuel cost of $199 and a monthly average heating oil cost of $6. The District of Columbia, New Mexico, Nebraska, Kansas and Arizona made up the top five areas where energy costs are the lowest.

Bonita Springs city officials joined the Magnus family of local developers in breaking ground Tuesday night on Rooftop at Riverside, a family owned and operated food truck park planned on the vacant northeast corner of Old 41 Road and Reynolds Street. The project includes as many as eight food trucks and a two-story bar that will overlook Bonita’s Riverside Park across the street.
“It’s going to be so cool. The bar is going to be out front here and the way that the city has developed the code, they would like us to put an overhang over the sidewalk. So, part of the upstairs bar will be over the sidewalk. It’s going to be terrific event viewing, terrific overflow seating and really wonderful for the community to experience all the great events at Riverside Park,” said Chris Magnus, co-developer of Rooftop at Riverside.
Plans for the project show a two-story building on the hard corner of Old 41 and Reynolds Street with pads for food trucks on the north and east sides of the lot surrounding an open area for seating, activities and events in the middle of the property. “I like the thought of it being a gathering place for Bonita Springs families where folks from all walks of life can come and have some great food and some cold drinks and really enjoy our climate here,” Magnus said.
