AMS Vans was honored to be part of the incredible MDA Muscle Walk event this past weekend! It was a day filled with inspiration, community, and boundless hope as we joined others to support those affected by neuromuscular disease.

4-year-old Desi had a traumatic start to life, including a nine-month-long NICU stay and a diagnosis so rare, doctors admitted they knew very little about it. Many times his family didn't expect him to make it home, but miraculously, he did.

Because of his complex medical needs, Desi's trips away from home have only consisted of doctor appointments or critical procedures.

While the ADA does make a tremendous difference for those with disabilities, this anniversary is a strong reminder to EVERYONE that there's ALWAYS MORE we can do—in our day to day lives, our businesses, and our endeavors to make the world a more accessible place. For everyone.

. Meet Miranda and Skyla. Miranda has been battling Huntington’s disease for the same amount of time as her daughter Skyla has been alive, nine years. While 2013 brought their bright light, Skyla, it also brought the death of Miranda’s dad and the start of Miranda’s symptoms of Huntington’s. Knowing what the awful disease would bring, Miranda also made the difficult decision to place Skyla in her mom Tina’s care that year.

At three years old, Skyla’s health took a turn for the worst and she was placed on hospice with little to no explanation other than her cerebellum atrophied (she tested negative for Huntington's or any other genetic conditions). But Tina wasn’t about to watch more tragedy unfold on her girls. Despite what doctors thought, despite being placed on hospice as a toddler, Skyla has gotten better since then. She turned nine years old a few weeks ago, and she still delivers that feisty and bright personality. Just before Skyla’s 9th birthday, our partners at AMS Vans delivered a new van to their home, customized to fit both wheelchairs – all possible because of our donors. Meet Nathan D. Nathan is an 11-year-old boy with congenital Myasthenia Gravis, a disease that causes muscle weakness that worsens with physical exertion. Truth be told, we met Nathan and his mom at the start of the year and could tell they were in desperate need of a wheelchair-accessible van. But we were forced to place them in the “maybe” column.

Several months went by, and Nathan and his mom tried to carry on as usual. And then, somewhere along the way, one moment changed everything.
