Equal Justice University 2024 has concluded!

This year, we honored the incredible work of our access to justice community with awards to Amy Willoughby Bryant with the B. Riney Green Award for statewide access to justice collaboration. Stewart Clifton received the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Lucinda Smith was awarded the Janice M. Holder Award.

On Thursday, TBA President Ed Lanquist delivered a powerful address, emphasizing the importance of access to justice and the TBA's commitment to providing quality legal services.

Aaron Sorkin’s stage adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning book and Academy Award winning movie "To Kill a Mockingbird" has rekindled interest in the role lawyers play in leading their communities. This highly interactive three part series, taught by Doug Blaze and Buck Lewis — founders of the Institute for Professional Leadership at UT Law — will examine the lynching scene on the porch of the jail, the trial and the final scene on the Finch porch after an attempt on the Finch children’s lives. Nashville lawyer Ed Lanquist Jr. was sworn in last week as the 144th president of the Tennessee Bar Association. The oath of office was administered by Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Holly Kirby during the TBA’s Annual Lawyers Lunch. Lanquist is a shareholder in the Nashville office of Baker Donelson and has practiced intellectual property law for more than 30 years. During remarks following the swearing in, Lanquist pledged a renewed emphasis on serving members of the association during the coming bar year and an increased focus on educating lawyers about legislative issues important to the legal profession — including elimination of the professional privilege tax and increased funding for indigent representation. He also announced two exciting CLE programs: an Urban Bourbon trip to Louisville, Kentucky, and a return to Cuba in February 2025.
