Last night I went for a walk in Bicentennial Park and could hear voices, music and laughter coming from sheds. As I walked closer I could see that there was an event with tables of different vendors and food trucks lined up against the gate. It was different than the regular farmer’s market I’d seen on weekends. There were vendors from clothes to candles to baked goods in rows among young Black people and families, all smiling and hugging one another and even dancing.

I discovered that is a monthly marketplace every first Friday that brings more than 40 Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs, all in the spirit of empowering Black businesses.

This was a good opportunity to try some new food, so I found , a family-owned and operated business that brings authentic Guyanese food (a mixture of west Indian, Portuguese and Caribbean influences), to Nashville. Their menu included Pineapple bowls with veggie fried rice or lo mein with chicken, salmon or jackfruit. They also had a variety of wings, a la carte items, and drinks.

I couldn’t just order one thing so I tried their salmon veggie fried rice pineapple bowl, lemon pepper jerk wings and Caribbean lemonade. It all tasted amazing but what really stood out were the wings - perfectly seasoned and crispy with just the right amount of spice. You can find them in West Nashville or try them at the next Nashville Black Market.
