July is Disability Pride Month! Throughout July, we’re spotlighting artists with disabilities in the performing arts. This week, we’re highlighting actress and advocate Lauren Ridloff.
Ridloff began her career playing small roles in film and television. It wasn’t until 2018, when director Kenny Leon hired her as his American Sign Language tutor, that her career began to really take off. Leon was producing a revival of Children of a Lesser God, and Ridloff was asked to fill in on a read-through in the casting process. Based on her performance, Ridloff was cast as the female lead, and it earned her first Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Play.
That same year, Ridloff was cast as Connie for The Walking Dead’s ninth season. She would remain on the hit show until the series finale in 2022. During her time on The Walking Dead, she was also cast as Makkari in Marvel’s Eternals (2021), becoming the first deaf superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When asked about representing the deaf community onscreen, Ridloff told The Hollywood Reporter, “I feel like seeing Makkari on the screen is, first of all, so important for the Deaf community. We need a superhero that represents us…growing up, I didn’t dream of becoming an actor because I didn’t see enough of myself on the screen. I didn’t get to dream that big, so now, with The Eternals, I’m hoping that more people will be able to dream bigger.” According to Comic Book Resources, her portrayal of Makkari led to an increase in internet searches for American Sign Language courses.
In 2020, Ridloff was honored with the SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award (named the first actor with a disability to receive an Oscar), which “honors a professional performer, writer, or other industry professional with a disability that has substantially contributed to the overall awareness of the disability experience through the media, thereby validating, strengthening, and enhancing the cultural heritage and pride of people with disabilities.” That same year, she was selected by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts as a 2020 breakthrough performer.
Along with being a critically acclaimed actor, Ridloff is also an advocate for representation and inclusion. In 2023, she gave a lecture as part of the Kean University President’s Distinguished Lecture Series.

July is Disability Pride Month! Throughout July, we’re spotlighting artists with disabilities in the performing arts. This week, we’re highlighting actress, advocate, and Rhode Island native Aria Mia Loberti.
Unlike most actors, Loberti’s career started on a whim. She originally studied at the University of Rhode Island and earned three degrees in Philosophy, Communications Studies, and Political Science. She continued her studies at the University of London, earning a master's degree in ancient rhetoric. She began questioning her career path during her doctoral studies in ancient rhetoric. She responded to a global casting search for Netflix’s adaptation of All The Light We Cannot See. She was awarded the role of the main character, Marie-Laure, a blind French teenager in Nazi-occupied France. Critics praised Loberti for her performance in the miniseries.
Along with being a critically acclaimed actress, Loberti is a human rights activist fighting for education, accessibility, and gender equality. She has participated in the United Nations and the UN Women's Summits. In 2018 she gave a TEDx Talk about growing up with a disability and her experience advocating for equity. On April 18, 2024, UNICEF announced that Loberti would be their newest ambassador.
