๐ŸŒŠ A week full of Bay Adventures! ๐ŸŒŠ

First up was our Surfcasting Bay Adventure on Gooseberry Island, where 9 anglers of all ages joined us for some fishing fun. ๐ŸŽฃ

Later in the week, families gathered at the Hawes Family Learning Center at the Sawmill for an enriching story-time presented by Gloria from PACE Child Care Works. ๐Ÿ“š She read The Cloud Book, captivating the kids' imaginations with its engaging illustrations. โ˜๏ธโœจ

After story-time, we hit the trails and discovered sweet pepperbush, an American toad, an American dagger moth, russula mushrooms, and more! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿ„

We are now seeing debris from the mid-July windmill blade failure off the coast of Nantucket wash ashore on our Cuttyhunk Island Reserves. We've also spotted floating pieces all the way into Buzzards Bay near the Cape Cod Canal while aboard the R/V Buzzards Baykeeper.

This is absolutely unacceptable and Vineyard Wind - the company responsible - must clean it up. The company has established a hotline for people to report debris for their crews to come clean up. Help us make sure Vineyard Wind picks up their mess by calling in all observed debris.

The Vineyard Wind Debris Reporting Hotline: 833-609-5768

We are strong supporters of offshore wind. Climate change is already destroying our Bay's vital salt marshes and warming water is making pollution cleanup more difficult. The development of large-scale, clean, renewable energy is critical if we are going to Save Buzzards Bay, and nothing is more capable of doing that in our region that offshore wind. But that doesn't mean Vineyard Wind (or any wind company) can litter our Bay and shores. They must do better to prevent this from happening again, and the first step is to clean up this mess right now!

Septic Systems, Nitrogen Pollution Stress Buzzards Bay Ecosystem 07/11/2024

ICYMI - Award-winning actor Sam Waterston partnered with the Coalition on a video reminding residents that nitrogen pollution from septic systems continues to put serious stress on the Bayโ€™s ecosystem. Watch and share with your friends and neighbors!

Tackling a Sticky Issue in New Bedford Harbor 07/06/2024

Between 2006-2022, there were 639 reported oil spills in New Bedford Harbor, the vast majority of which originated from the discharge of oil contaminated bilge water.

Last month, the Coalition secured funding to advance plans to establish a permanent bilge collection site to service the commercial fishing fleet.

Tackling a Sticky Issue in New Bedford Harbor The Coalition continues to focus on water quality across Buzzards Bayโ€™s numerous harbors and coves, including New Bedford Harbor โ€“ the busy commercial port that hosts more than 400 fishing vessels and a burgeoning offshore wind energy industry. Itโ€™s also the only Bay harbor plagued with a chro...

This past Tuesday was the first of 4 nutrient water sampling days collected by the Buzzards Bay Coalition's โ€œBaywatchersโ€ volunteers for its 33rd consecutive monitoring season.

These community volunteers collected, filtered, and delivered a record breaking 232 water samples in one day to the Marine Biological Ecosystems Laboratory in Woods Hole!

These water samples provide nutrient analysis results from our local harbors from RI to Marthaโ€™s Vineyard and throughout Buzzards Bay.

The Buzzards Bay Coalition uses this data in its efforts to protect clean water and reduce the impacts caused by excessive Nitrogen Pollution.

BBC partners at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) designed an easy to build, low-cost robot intended for coastal water quality monitoring. It is called TideRider because, by controlling whether it is on the surface or the seafloor, TideRider opportunistically harness natural currents to move in a controlled way (e.g., toward a specific area of a harbor).

This summer, WHOI engineers will be testing TideRiders equipped with dissolved oxygen, temperature, and salinity sensors to measure water quality around Onset Bay.

The data will be compared with six sensors that BBC and the Woodwell Climate Research Center are putting out at docks around Onset Bay and to data collected by Baywatcher volunteers.
