The US National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio Texas is predicting heavy rains across much of South-Central Texas, beginning Wednesday morning and lasting into Thursday afternoon, prompting concerns about the possibility of flash flooding. A Flood Watch has been issued for the region, including Comal and Guadalupe counties, from 7 a.m. Wednesday, June 19 until 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 20. Forecasters are predicting a widespread 2 to 5 inches of rain along and west of the I-35 corridor, with higher rain totals possible which could potentially lead to concerns of river flooding. City of New Braunfels staff is closely monitoring weather conditions and is preparing to make a number of decisions to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. The City is preparing to possibly open the Emergency Operations Center, and the outdoor warning sirens will be used should river flooding occur.

CITY FACILITIES 🏛️
▪️Wednesday, June 19, is already a City holiday in observance of Juneteenth, with closures scheduled for most City facilities, including City Hall, Municipal Court, the Public Library, Parks & Recreation administrative offices, and the Westside Community Center.
▪️Das Rec will have normal hours on Wednesday.
▪️At this time, there are no anticipated changes to residential Solid Waste & Recycling services.
▪️City officials will monitor river conditions closely to determine if a temporary closure of access to the Comal River and the City Tube Chute is needed.

ROAD AND LOW WATER CROSSING PREPARATION 🚧
▪️City street crews are pre-staging barricades at low-water crossings and areas that are prone to street flooding.
▪️Fire and Police officials are preparing their flood response vehicles (including swift water rescue boats) ahead of the inclement weather.
▪️Should road closures become necessary, residents can find updated local road closure information on the City’s website at newbraunfels.gov

CITY MEETINGS AND EVENTS 📅
Decisions on postponements or cancellations for City meetings, programs, and events will be made should weather conditions deteriorate.

City staff will continue to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and any announcements about City facilities or services will be posted on the City’s website at newbraunfels.gov and on the City’s social media accounts including Facebook, Instagram, and NextDoor.

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible in North America. The City of New Braunfels, just outside the path of totality, will experience a deep partial solar eclipse. The deep partial solar eclipse will begin at 12:15 p.m., with maximum coverage at 1:35 p.m., and ending at 2:56 p.m.

Due to the rareness of this event, South Central Texas (including New Braunfels) expects thousands of visitors to begin arriving on Friday, April 5, and leaving on Tuesday, April 9. With that in mind, New Braunfels residents are encouraged to view the eclipse from where they are and avoid traveling.

🌑Preparations made by the City of New Braunfels include:

▪️Solid Waste and Recycling routes will begin collection routes early on Monday, April 8. Residents are encouraged to place their trash or recycling carts at the curb the night before.
▪️Additional police officers are on patrol, and full staffing is provided at all six Fire Department stations.
▪️Additional 911 dispatchers to assist with increased call volume.
▪️City fleet vehicles will be prepped and staged should they become necessary.
▪️The City's Emergency Management Division will be monitoring developments, and the City Emergency Operations Center will be operational during the day of the eclipse.
