On August 19th, Megan Schnetzer and Dr. Stacie Zdrojewski welcomed the very first cohort of the Tutors to Teachers partnership with Reading Assist. This incredible group consists of eight dedicated students (Reading Assist tutors) who are on their way to earning Masterβs degrees in Special Education.
Through this partnership, these students will receive credit for the training and classroom experiences they gain while working with Reading Assist. By the Spring of 2026, they will be ready to make a difference as licensed teachers!

The COELA Department gathered for a productive retreat on August 7th. It was a day filled with insightful discussions, learning opportunities, and collaboration. We explored new ideas and strengthened our commitment to the goals ahead. Excited to see how the outcomes of this retreat will shape our future projects! π‘π€
From June 27-July 1, Dr. Thelma Hinds, Dr. Stacie Zdrojewski, Mrs. Theresa Carter, and Mrs. Lara Crowley proudly represented the University and College of Education at the National Educators Rising competition in Washington D.C. πΊπΈ
Dr. Hinds served as a judge for the Teacher Created Materials competition, Dr. Zdrojewski judged the Creative Expression competition, Mrs. Carter judged the Impromptu Speech competition, and Mrs. Crowley judged Research Challenges. β¨
Additionally, they delivered their engaging and impactful workshop on Cultivating Equity for the second time, inspiring a passionate group of future teachers and educators from across the country. ππ
Dr. Matt Wilson attended the grand opening of Futures First Gaming's new "FFG Central" facility. This incredible space will be home to FFG's innovative programming, including their workforce development initiative, which WilmU is proud to partner in.
Dr. Wilson had the honor of speaking at the event, alongside representatives from Discover and New Castle County Executive Matt Meyers. The media also highlighted the exciting FFG/WilmU partnership around the E-sports certificate program.

Dr. Kate Cottle (Chair of the Interdisciplinary Studies and Literature), along with Michelle Blake (West Chester University), Caitlin Gallagher (University of Delaware), and Dr. Charles MacArthur, has had their article, "Supporting Metacognition in Writing Strategy Instruction: Effective Learning Strategies for the First-Year Student and Beyond," accepted for publication in the Journal of the National Organization for Student Success (J-NOSS)! πβ¨
The article is set to be published in the journalβs second issue, expected late fall/early winter. This work focuses on essential strategies for self-regulated learning and improving college readiness. Stay tuned for more details!

Yesterday, colleagues from COELA had the incredible opportunity to attend the DAWN 2024 Leadership Summit, and what an experience it was! Featuring a top-notch keynote panel with Goldey-Beacom College President Dr. Colleen Perry Keith and former DSU Board Chair Dr. Devona Williams, the event was nothing short of inspiring.
The day was filled with amazing breakout sessions covering a variety of topics including "Dare to Be Authentic," Leadership and A.I., Invaluable Laws of Growth, and Workplace Engagement. It was a day of learning, growth, and empowerment, and we're grateful to have been a part of it!
Dr. Diane Bansbach, Mathematics Chair and Faculty Mentor for Men's Soccer, went above and beyond this past Wednesday, March 13! She graciously hosted a delightful chili dinner for our Men's Soccer Team! Games focused on building team relationships and helping team members identify durable skills sought after by employers. A good time was had by all.

100 Years of Winter Olympic Games The first Olympic Winter Games were held in 1924 in the French Alps. Over 10 days, the host town of Chamonix brought together athletes from 16 nations.
This past December, forty-eight talented juniors from Christiana High School, along with their Vice Principal, Robert Graham, and counselor, Sydney Brown, had a fantastic experience at Wilmington University - New Castle Campus. π«β¨
These students are part of CHS's Honors Academy and are gearing up to take PHI 100 & ENG 122 on our campus this spring! ππ The day was filled with a campus tour, a comprehensive cohort overview, and the excitement of securing their badges.

On January 6, 2024, Dr. James Webb, Director of Military Affairs at Wilmington University and COELA Adjunct Assistant Professor, received the Delaware Distinguished Service Medal at the Delaware National Guard 23rd Annual Senior Leadership Conference. π
Leadership from the Delaware Army and Air National Guard met for a day of development, discussions on legislative priorities, networking, and sharing successes. Special guests included Delaware Governor John Carney, Senator Tom Carper, and Senator Chris C***s, with a heartfelt video message from Congresswoman Lisa Blunt-Rochester.
Dr. Webb was recognized for his outstanding contribution. π He goes above and beyond, providing dedicated support to military students. As an Adjunct Assistant Professor, he shares knowledge in courses that empower students in the College of Education & Liberal Arts and the College of Business.
The Delaware Distinguished Service Medal citation highlights Dr. Webb's pivotal role in initiating a groundbreaking offer. Thanks to his efforts, Wilmington University introduced a 20% tuition discount for Delaware Army and Air National Guard members. π€ This initiative not only represents a significant milestone but also reflects Dr. Webb's commitment to supporting the educational pursuits of National Guard members, recognizing their invaluable contribution to the community.

Dr. Matt Wilson (Director of Liberal Arts) has been voted in as the Vice President of Division 2 for the NCAA's Faculty Athletics Representative Association (FARA) executive committee at the FARA annual meeting in Indianapolis! π
His new role involves providing leadership from an overarching perspective for Division 2 FARs. Dr. Wilson will collaborate closely with the FARA President, VPs from Divisions 1 and 3, as well as the NCAA staff on various initiatives and the annual meeting. Serving as a pivotal point of contact for Division 2 FARs, his role will also establish a strong connection between them and the NCAA.
