In Sweden, a permanent electrified road is being built, the first in the world for electric vehicles (EVs) to be charged while traveling. The highway chosen for this pioneering project is the European route E20, which connects the logistics centers between Hallsberg and Örebro. This road is located between the three main cities of the country, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.
The project is currently in the procurement phase and is scheduled to be built by 2025. The charging method for E20 has not yet been decided, but there are three types of charging under consideration: a catenary system, a conductor (ground-based) system, and an inductive system.
This initiative is part of Sweden's efforts to decarbonize the transport sector and prepare the necessary infrastructure for fossil fuel-free mobility. Little Island is a stunning public park situated in the Hudson River near Manhattan's Meatpacking District. Designed by Heatherwick Studio, supported by Standard Architects and the landscape architecture studio MNLA, and engineered by Arup, this $260 million, 2.4-acre artificial island offers a unique blend of nature and urban design. The park's foundation consists of 281 prestressed concrete piles, each 900 mm thick and driven 73 meters into the riverbed silt to ensure stability. The park's varied elevation, with upper edges ranging from 4.6 to 19 meters above the water, creates an undulating topography that enhances its aesthetic appeal and resilience against flooding.

A key feature of Little Island is its 132 prefabricated concrete pots, which support the park and contribute to its distinctive floating appearance. These pots, resembling tulip shapes, transfer the park's load into the piles. They were designed with a uniform pentagonal plan geometry, known as a Cairo pentagon pattern, which allows for variations in height and upper edge inclination to accommodate the park's topography. The Cairo pentagon tiling pattern helped rationalize the structure's geometry, enabling efficient production and invisible repetition in form. Arup used advanced parametric modeling to determine the concrete's thickness and the placement of stainless-steel elements that join the pots together. This detailed 3D planning enabled efficient production and assembly of the pots, which were fabricated off-site and transported to Manhattan for installation.

The park's construction also involved innovative solutions to address its dual function as a green space and a performance venue. Arup's team integrated infrastructure for events, including acoustics, audio-visual systems, and flexible performance spaces. The park features a 687-seat amphitheater and additional performance areas that blend seamlessly with the landscape. For stormwater management, the park functions as a giant green roof, capturing and treating runoff through green infrastructure elements before releasing it back into the Hudson River. This integration of advanced engineering and sustainable design makes Little Island a landmark of contemporary urban park design, offering New Yorkers a unique and multifunctional public space.
