Connecticut Operation Lifesaver
At the end of the first year the fatality rate in Idaho dropped by 39 percent. In 1973, the same education program was started in Nebraska.
Vision
To be the recognized leader in providing the public with rail safety education and ending death and injuries due to trespassing and collisions on the tracks. In 1972, a concerned Union Pacific Railroad employee, working with the support of many Idaho communities, established a state-wide public education program in an effort to reduce the numbers of crashes, injuries and fatalities occurrin

‘Rail Safety Week’ a reminder not to take chances WALLINGFORD -- With Connecticut featuring nearly 700 rail crossings and 850 miles of railroad tracks state wide, the state Department of Transportation, Amtrak and local police rolled out the annual rail safety week Monday. And their message is simple: see tracks, think trains. Approximately every t...
is one of the themes to be highlighted during Rail Safety Week, Sept. 22-28. Several states have recently implemented state laws prohibiting the use of cellphones while driving to prevent accidents and fatalities as a result of distracted drivers.
Even if your state does not have laws against the use of cell phones while driving, consider the cost of distracted driving near railroad tracks. It's no contest.
Does your state have laws against the use of cell phones while driving? What do you think of these laws?
According to FRA statistics, more than 1,000 people were killed or seriously injured in railroad trespassing incidents in 2018. Train fatalities affect not only individuals and their families, but also the conductors, railroad staff, and first responders involved.
Trespassing on railroad tracks is illegal and dangerous. Consider the cost for yourself, your loved ones, and others.
Our motto is "See Tracks Think Train." The reality is, many people become desensitized to the dangers of railroad tracks. Trains can travel from any direction at any time of day on any track. Always be prepared for a train when approaching a train track.

Incidents that involve trains are a tragedy for victims and their families, first responders, engineers, and others. Trying to "beat" a train is illegal - and dangerous.

Drivers, remember: trains can be up to 3 feet wider than railroad tracks. If you're in traffic, don't go forward if you can't safely clear the crossing, and never stop on the tracks.
MORE SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVERS: http://bit.ly/2J51NAC
Did you know? Emergency vehicle sirens can mask the sound of an approaching train's horn.
Emergency vehicle drivers should turn off sirens, air horns and other sound-producing devices when approaching all railroad crossings. Before crossing, slow down, open the vehicle's window, and look both ways to see if a train is approaching.
Trains have the right-of-way at railroad crossings, even in situations involving emergency vehicles.
It takes the average train traveling at 55mph the length of approximately 18 football fields to stop. Don't risk your life, or others' lives - obey crossing signs and signals.
We're grateful to our many volunteers around U.S. who help us educate and inform on the importance of rail safety. Thanks for all you do!
Look for the Blue and White ENS Sign Did you know? The blue and white ENS sign posted at or near a rail crossing is used to notify the railroad of an emergency or warning device malfunction.
