Here’s how this man is instilling a love for antiques and vintage into his son.

Children and antiques do not mix. Well, that is what I have been told. We are constantly asked how our son is so well-behaved around our pieces. Why doesn't he break things?

First, we have brought him up to respect the things in our home. We tell him that we have purchased these things for our use and enjoyment, and that he can enjoy them for a long time if he takes care of them.

Secondly, we tell him to ask before touching. This is important, as it prepares him to visit museums as well as other people's homes. We want him to be able to go places where he can learn, while being respectful to his surroundings. And lets face it, who wants children that are destructive to visit their home.

Thirdly, if he breaks something by accident, we don't lose our minds. If you implement the first to ideas, the break is likely not to happen, but if it does, it is unlikely to be an ancient Egyptian artifact (which we do own). Our boy has been drinking from glasses since he was two years-old and has never broken one. He eats from china and has not even chipped a piece.

There are many reasons to teach children to respect old things. Antiques represent a time that was before our own, and understanding the past helps us not to make the same mistakes, again. We live in a throw away society, where our phones are out of date before we leave the store with them. Antiques are here to stay. They have value, both monetary and intrinsic. Once they are gone, it is pretty final.

I am not recommending a rigid environment where children cannot have fun. This will only cause them to hate antiques and run from the idea of having them as adults. Let them explore... let them have their crazy moments, while instilling in them that taking care of their things, and your things, is very important. I believe this kind of thinking helps them become adults who value community, knowledge, and relationships.

So, remember- teach them to be careful, ask before touching, and don't be rigid. And most of all, enjoy your children.
