Most music that is considered uniquely American has been influenced by the rhythms and tempos that pour out into the streets of this uniquely American city born of the merger of Spanish, French, African, and Caribbean cultures. Very sad news. We appreciated you and will miss you!
I got some extremely sad news today. My dear friend and traveling partner in the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band, Griper Nugent passed away suddenly today. He was in NY and he suddenly collapsed and passed away.
Griper was the front of house sound engineer for the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. Everyone from the band was from all over the U.S.A., but Griper was the only person other me that was from New Orleans. We traveled the world together. He took care of our sound and took very specific care of all of my keyboard gear. When he was not traveling with us in the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band, he was one of the in-house engineers for the famous Frenchmen St. club - d.b.a
He had many friends in New Orleans and around the world. His parents Specifically said:
"We do not have any contact numbers among his friends in NOLA. Could someone there please get the word out? We know he had many friends that will want to know."
If you knew Griper or knew people that knew him, please help spread the word.
Griper was a sweet person that was loved by many people. We'll all miss him dearly. I'll miss him. RIP Brian "Griper" Nugent.
Nice to see this level of recognition. RIP SYLVESTER!

The Jazz & Heritage Music Relief Fund is a statewide relief fund to support Louisiana musicians who have lost income amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This unprecedented crisis has led to the indefinite cancellation of gigs, event postponements, and venue closures around the world. It has left many Louisiana musicians and others who work in the music industry facing a total or near-total loss of income for the foreseeable future.
The Jazz & Heritage Music Relief Fund was created by the Foundation to support Louisiana musicians whose livelihoods have been adversely impacted by COVID-19. The board plans to continue to explore opportunities to support Louisiana’s music culture during this crisis to expand upon its existing community support.
The Jazz & Heritage Foundation has invested proceeds from Jazz Fest directly into the community with grants to fund projects that support the Foundation's mission. Over the last 10 years, more than $6.1 million dollars have been awarded in Community Partnership Grants. Through the Jazz & Heritage Relief Fund, the Foundation will continue its support of Louisiana’s music industry professionals during these uncertain times. Establishing this fund is part of its wider plan to support the local cultural community in the coming weeks.
