✨10 Years Ago✨ I was so giddy. I had my first “storefront”. A temporary booth space in a grocery store parking lot next to a generator-run food truck with heavy chargrill smoke. 🔥🦪 It was perfect. 🥰 After 3 years prior of building Home Malone from the ground up in my carport - having a booth at a market felt like dreams coming true. (Fun Fact: Home Malone started in 2011 as a furniture refinishing business.)
I can still remember. I felt so legitimate with my little Square card reader & a cash bag. These seem like such little details now, but it felt like magic then.
I began making wood signs ( ) & sold them on Etsy & wholesale.
As the business grew, I rented out a little studio on Magazine St. I worked all the time cutting, painting, & sanding away to keep up with the sales.
I began painting on canvas again & offered custom 2D house paintings ( ). Looking back, I charged way too little & accepted way too many orders during that phase. 😅
Live interactive paintings at local events in 2015 led to the paint party series. But one paint party would be the bridge to where we are today.
I hosted a paint party at a store called SöPö. After a great night, I followed up with the store owner. She said she was moving the location. “Do you mind me asking how much the lease is…?” 😬 And that’s how our retail store story began.
Home Malone Mid City was supposed to be a paint party & studio space that had a few items from local makers. My goal: sell a few items while I was teaching a painting class to cover the electric bills…
Opening the doors 6 weeks before Christmas in 2016 led to accidental retail success. I’m glad many of the makers were local to help me restock quickly. I was so new to retail I was googling “what is backstock”?
Since then, I’ve opened a second location (), survived a pandemic, bought a production/fulfillment/online facility & opened a showroom for wholesale clients in Atlanta… and I’m sure a few other things!
I’m grateful to be part of a community that supports the hard work of small businesses! 🫶✨💕 Thank you!
Does anyone remember Home Malone from 10 years ago!?
