Rebecca B. Alston: Earth’s Voice
September 7 - 28, 2024

Opening Reception
Saturday, September 7, 6 - 8 pm

Octavia Art Gallery is pleased to present Earth’s Voice, a solo exhibition of works by Rebecca B. Alston.

In celebration of International Day of Clean Air and International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, Alston’s Earth’s Voice explores a plea for better respect of the earth, with nudges on what society can do to create a world of substantial ecological balance by understanding the tension between environmental, social, and political issues. Her interest in the extra-artistic—most notably from scientific references—fuels her restless, inquisitive sensibility. Alston’s intentions are to bring an awareness to specific problems society faces. She has been an environmental advocate for the last two decades.

Dan Charbonnet’s art is grounded in the rudiments of painting. He strives to achieve balance between process and application. The construction process comprises actions like ripping, stretching, heating, stapling, fraying, and sewing the canvas, while the application involves the taping, priming, painting (hard lines, soft lines, washes, gestures), and curating color.

Charbonnet’s works continue to evolve, most recently with the new addition of painted canvas strips that are sewn onto the raw canvas strips.

Inspired by classic 17th and 18th century botanical illustration, Carmen Almon endeavors to represent the fragility of a moment in time, creating not botanical replicas of nature but rather her personal interpretation of her memory of a particular plant, flower, branch, or bud, from its roots to its fruits.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Fidelity Bank White Linen Night 2024! We are so grateful that the featured artist Ryoko Endo & her NY group could join us to celebrate. The exhibition “Ryoko Endo: Crescendo” runs through August 31st.

The paintings are thick with many built up layers. A careful application of opaque and translucent paint application creates a push pull effect, that draws in the viewer. A successful painting has the perfect blend of harmony and discord created by the delicate balance and conflict in between the color and brushwork employed. This duality reflects one’s experience in life. -Ryoko Endo

Greta Van Campen is an artist based in Thomaston, Maine and is known for a hard-edged graphic approach to representation. She has spent a great deal of time traveling across the United States sourcing inspiration from the landscapes, small towns, and cities throughout America. She starts each painting working from her own photographs and sketches, first deciding on large compositional elements and dynamic lines, then painting in layers and masking off areas and adding smaller details as she continues. This distilled and stylized approach imbues her traditional subject matter with a freshness and modernity.

Luke Forsyth enjoys working in an array of colors and mediums. He draws inspiration from the everyday, with subjects ranging from domestic interiors and expansive sweeping landscapes. Forsyth’s newest series of paintings draws from his background in theater to examine the parallels between visual and performing art. Focusing on art and theater institutions as sites of physical activity framed by systems of display, he distills elements from each discipline to expose performance in life and life in performance. Forsyth’s paintings are both stage and tableaux; using stagecraft as physical framing devices, flowers and vessels as performers, texture and color as dialogue and blocking. The works are simultaneously playful, alive, still, and focused - like crystallized set pieces from surrealist plays.

“Each type of medium carries a different meaning, visual weight and tension. I combine paint that has a transparent, ethereal quality with sand which feels tangible and carries a greater density. Sand is a physical object, yet its existence is a representation of the passage of time. It is the result of rock erosion and it is a material that continually assembles into new patterns. In the Buddhist tradition, sand is used to convey beauty and ephemerality through the construction and subsequent destruction of mandalas. Using these themes as anchors of inspiration, the works evoke impressions of dunes, flora, and natural phenomena while departing from a faithful rendering of reality. “ - Marina Savashynskaya Dunbar
