Public health messages are everywhere, which shows that for health organizations who have something to say, there’s a robust audience just waiting to be reached.

The challenge is standing out and getting your message to that audience in a saturated market.

Through our work with state and local public health agencies, universities, and pharmaceutical companies, we’ve developed a few strategies that can help health care organizations cut through the noise.

1) Steer away from clinical language, visuals, and web designs.

2) Represent your target audience in your imagery, photography, and copy.

3) Test your messages!

Want to create messages that reach and engage a wider audience? Here’s a tip: one strategy does not fit all. Your overall strategy should be made up of several smaller strategies that speak to specific demographics. Follow these tips to get started:

⭐️ Diversify Your Marketing and Creative Team.

It’s one thing to show diversity in your content, but it’s another to actually inform your content with lived experiences. Make sure to keep diversity in mind when hiring, but also consider leaning on outside vendors and agencies who specialize in reaching select audiences.

⭐️ Segment Your Creative and Activate at Select Events.

Having a diverse group of models and characters in your ads is great! However, also consider segmenting different ads for specific audiences. If you’re running an ad on OUT.com, your creative should primarily feature LGBTQ+ folk, and if you are on Essence.com, you should be featuring Black women, etc. This strategy can apply to in-person events as well.

⭐️ Think About What Communities Are Still Underrepresented in Campaigns.

Some communities are still being left behind in diverse marketing, such as AAPI people and people with disabilities. These are largely untapped markets that the right campaigns can effectively reach and support. Again, be sure sure the communities you speak to are actually represented in the formation of your campaign. Your campaign will then not only be more genuine but can also advance equity and representation for these folks.

Boombox partnered with Gilead Sciences to Press Play on Pride…and then we put it on repeat. 😎

This interactive experiential campaign spanned 35+ field events across the US and featured a prize wheel and a UX-based photo station, where guests could scan a QR code to design their own “Pride Album Cover.”

Press Play also brought our concept to life with our 12' boombox with a Live DJ, a music lounge, and 360 photo booth experience. We also made sure our experience delivered vital information about HIV testing using strategically placed QR codes, and the outside wall of our station featured location-based facts about HIV.

We were able to reach thousands of people and promote essential HIV resources—all with a Pride experience that attendees won’t soon forget.

Stick with your brand colors. Consumers only start to recognize a brand after repeated exposure. Make sure every piece of marketing is cohesive and reflects your brand’s overall color palette and branding—and soon, you’ll be instantly recognizable from the competition.

Create re-usable brand elements. Having a collection of repeatable brand elements like patterns, illustrations, icons, and textures will make your campaign cohesive and will help you stand out. World Pride 🤝 New Orleans & Company

When we had the opportunity to bring the spirit and energy of the Crescent City to World Pride—while encouraging people to come on down for an unforgettable visit—we made sure to deliver in true NOLA fashion.

We brought out a 50' riverboat float with riders including New Orleans locals, influencers, press, and Mardi Gras costumers, and we handed out over 20,000 custom beads along the parade route. We also gave out snowballs, king cakes, and much more at activations all across New York City.
