Happy National Bootlegger's Day, everyone! 🥃 Today, we're taking a trip down memory lane to honor the daring and resourceful individuals who kept spirits high during Prohibition.
Bootlegging, as it was known, was the illegal traffic in liquor in violation of legislative restrictions on its manufacture, sale, or transportation (source: Britannica). These crafty entrepreneurs found ways to smuggle alcohol using vehicles with hidden compartments, and even went as far as to increase the wood alcohol content in industrial alcohol producers (source: The Mob Museum, The Collector).
Most bootleggers sold their illicit wares in secret establishments known as speakeasies, blind pigs, blind tigers, beer flats, or rat dives (source: WSU Digital Exhibits). These hidden gems of the Roaring Twenties became social hotspots where folks could enjoy music, dance, and, of course, a clandestine cocktail or two.
Interestingly, the term "rum-running" was also used to describe the smuggling of alcoholic beverages where transportation was forbidden by law (source: Wikipedia). As we raise our glasses today, let's remember these audacious adventurers who risked it all for the love of libations.
