The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra is dedicated to maintaining live symphonic music and a full-scale symphony orchestra as an integral part of the cultural and educational life of the New Orleans area, the entire state of Louisiana, and the Gulf South region. Meet the LPO string section's newest addition, Rafael Gargate!
Staring his musical journey at a young age in Peru, Robert began his viola studies with his uncle Edgar Gargate and entered Peru's National Conservatory of Music at the age of 16.
Since then, Rafael has studied with violists Stefan Fehlandt, Lawrence Dutton, Roland Glassl, and Roberto Díaz, among others. He has participated in music festivals across the United States and in Brazil, and has held positions with Caton Symphony, Akron Symphony, Erie Philharmonic, and more.
We are thrilled to have Rafael join us at the LPO! 🎉 Keep an eye out for him in the viola section at our upcoming concerts!

A collective of New Orleans musicians who maintain the style of traditional New Orleans jazz, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has “held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 50 years, all the while carrying it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrantly living history.” These artists are part of a long line of generational musical memory, and we are excited to present our first-ever collaboration celebrating the cherished sounds of New Orleans!
