Cats out of the bag! Save your date this Friday evening for our opening reception.

LATITUDE Gallery is pleased to announce Red Thread, our November group show co-curated by the gallery and Anne-Laure Lemaitre , opening Friday, November 17th.

Red Thread includes works by Christina Barrera, Amy Bravo, CARO, Alexandra Hammond, Yirui Jia, Xian Kim, Kyungmin Jean Lee, Pol Morton, Ellie Kayu Ng, Luján Pérez Hernández, Jacqueline Qiu, Mariana Rodriguez Dal Pra, Jessica Wee, Lily Wong, Yukine Yanagi.

Red Thread is a small show that attempts at playfully minding the gap between eclectic practices and universes at the convergence of two visions: a gallery’s and a curator’s.

A red thread can be interpreted as a core idea or theme. It’s also a symbol of happiness and good luck to come. By asking a series of artists selected from each of their networks to integrate a red thread as connecting point, whether metaphorically or physically between their pieces, LATITUDE Gallery and curator Anne-Laure Lemaitre seek to build a space in which both their worlds can meet and become one.

We belong to a single field, and work towards similar goals. Yet, we too often approach the endeavor as solitary when it comes to the act of making within itself. Red Thread is not a show pretending to be revolutionary or wildly novel. It simply offers a space for artists to wonder how to incorporate a common element within their art, while considering its presence throughout an entire show. In doing so, it celebrates our kindredship despite our idiosyncrasies. and unfolds an expanse in which happy accidents, coincidences, dissonances, differences or similarities can coexist and meet, in all simplicity.

Josiah Ellner ‘s captivating dark color tones effectively craft a nighttime ambiance. His works portray moments of connection between humans and nature, all observed through the perspective of a digital native. They reveal stories that center on the intricate relationship between humanity and the environment. The artist adeptly captures instances that embody a sense of unity with nature, which in turn influences both the content and form of the artwork. The resulting expression carries a blend of whimsy, playfulness, and occasionally a hint of humor. Thus, the paintings feature figures and scenes that might initially appear ungainly but are imbued with lively patterns and a playful spirit.

LATITUDE Gallery New York Proudly Presents: "Night Glimmer"

Join us this October for a two-person exhibition featuring the six paintings of Josiah Ellner and one installation by Qiuyu Wu.

The opening reception is set for Friday, from 6-8 pm. We invite you to an evening filled with exceptional art and enriching conversations. Meet the artists personally and experience the debut of their latest masterpieces.

Qiuyu Wu (b. 1998) is a Chinese Canadian artist currently based in Brooklyn. Qiuyu has delved into creating large-scale ceramic installations to explore the relationship between humans and societal systems. Her work creates a dialogue that dissects power structures, examines how power manifests, and seeks to understand how individuals are molded by society.

Josiah Ellner is a Chicago-based artist who received his Master of Fine Arts in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Ellner was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin but spent his formative years in Xi’an China. Growing up in a city of more than 8 million people with scarce green spaces and little to no wildlife, he has always felt a disconnect from the natural world. Despite these feelings of alienation, he has found himself strangely drawn to nature and a yearning to reconnect with it. From his personal experiences of encountering and engaging with nature, Ellner weaves together playful narratives that capture these fleeting moments of wonder and intimate connection. Through careful abstraction, he is able to heighten and fully portray the whimsical, awkward and spiritual interactions that he has with the natural world.

Thew Smoak: Late Summer is curated by . The show will be on view till October 8th.

Drawing inspiration from Yasujiro Ozu’s artistic films and their extended moments of stillness, which grant audiences ample time to contemplate pathos in the ordinary, Smoak initiated "Late Summer" with ideas centered around reflection. This thematic thread is apparent in each piece of the show, ranging from literal mirrors reflecting figures, silver leaf surfaces reflecting viewers, and paintings capturing their own reflections.

Madeline Bohrer is an artist and curator based in New York City. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is an alumna of Boston University. To Smoak, mirrors represent empty thresholds symbolizing ghostly presence. The reflection captures a transient moment, constantly changing by time or memory, a notion depicted with atmospheric haze. This newfound atmosphere introduces an element of ambiguity, allowing the paintings to explore questions of presence, impermanence, time, and spectral space. Smoak’s paintings teach us the importance of sitting with and discovering contemplative moments within shadows and stillness.

Despite the intense heat, we were deeply moved by the enthusiasm of the crowd during the opening. Thank you all for braving the heat to support the arts and our artists. Thank you!

Curated by , Smoak has created a new body of figurative work that evokes poetic melancholy through his monochromatic shadowy palette, ghostly figures, and dark, empty spaces. Drawing inspiration from Yasujiro Ozu’s artistic films and their extended moments of stillness, which grant audiences ample time to contemplate pathos in the ordinary, Smoak initiated "Late Summer" with ideas centered around reflection. Tianshu Zhang is a painter now living and studying in New York. Her semi-abstract figurative paintings are often inspired by dreams, memories, fantasies and all forms of stage performance, rendered with traditional painting and drawing materials. With distorted, exaggerated human bodies and mysterious spaces in her paintings, Tianshu continually explores the themes of human nature, emotions, and desires. She got her Bachelor of Fine arts degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 2017 and came to New York to obtain her Master degree in fine arts at the School of Visual Arts in 2021.

Gao Lanyi is a conceptual feminist artist based in New York City. She is dedicated to creating constructive dialogues about women’s experiences from an intimate perspective, reflecting on her own background as an East Asian/Chinese woman. By reconsidering female roles in cultural and socio-political history, her work intervenes with the hegemonic status quo of the male gaze and reaffirms the power of women’s solidarity. Gao’s most recent work, a series of conceptual paintings titled Greeting Cards, explores the balance between righteousness and sarcasm in the history of feminist expression. Appropriat-ing My Melody, a 90s cartoon character from the Japanese company Sanrio, Gao brings a cultural perspective in considering feminism and female power. By infusing charisma and wittiness into the popular icon that has been associated with femininity, Gao makes the cute rabbit uncanny, in an attempt to transform the grief of gender inequality into positive energy that could help and support women and the feminist community.

Gao holds a BFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She will graduate there with an MFA in Fine Arts in 2023. Her work has been exhibited on various emerging plat-forms in New York, including in the most recent show “Gem Box '' at the LATITUDE Gallery New York, Foundation art fair at Artsy and Art021 Online Program.
