Kane Street Kids
Progressive Jewish preschool dedicated to building a community where all children feel they belong.
Kane Street Kids is excited to announce a new program this fall for parents with newborns and infants ages 0-6 months. The Babies & Bagels Fall 2024 Cohort will meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Each session will include time to mingle over a light breakfast as well as hear from local providers about services they offer for families with babies. Attendees will sample classes that range in topics from feeding, sleeping, tummy time, early play skills, infant language development, and early movement recommendations. Wishing a relaxing, safe, and most of all joyful summer to all of our KSK families! We have loved sharing our community with each and every one of you over the past year. Those moving on to the next chapter in their educational journeys will be dearly missed. And, we are so excited to welcome back returning children in the fall, and see how much they've grown in their months away!
What a wonderful week we had! Campers loved soaking up the sun on the roof during our final days of camp. The highlight of the week were the crafts and sensory activities, which allowed campers to make many memories (and messes!).
Campers were in for a special treat today--Maddy from visited for some extra fun artistic activities! Maddy started her lesson by reading Animal Colors, and then children got the opportunity to try out a color-mixing activity and a variety of sensory explorations inspired by the book. Starfish and jellyfish and stingrays oh my!
We made a SPLASH starting the first week of camp! Children have enjoyed plenty of roof top water play with our sprinklers and water table. When it's time to cool off inside, there's been plenty of themed activities for campers such as classroom safaris, diy planters, and miniature volcano making. See you on Monday for week two! 🌞
We had an incredible end of year celebration--thank you to all of the members of our community who made it possible! The Big Room was full of joy as we enjoyed crafts led by KSK's teachers, a blessing from Rabbi Michelle Dardashti, and special guests who joined us for face painting, balloon artistry, and a sing along. We will miss all of the children and families who made our 2023-24 school year so special, but are looking forward to starting camp this week!
KSK families, join us as we send off the 2023-24 school year with a morning of fun-filled activities! Swipe to the second slide for more details 🥳
Local author Maria Mandel Dunsche came to KSK to say "shello!" at the beginning of the week. She read Brave Mermaids: The Sea Dragon, the latest installment in her Brave Mermaids series. Children loved partaking in the read-aloud, and speaking about the power of kindness, central to the book's message. Thank you, Maria!
Springtime activities are in full bloom at KSK! We've been enjoying more time outdoors; soaking in the sun on our rooftop playspace, and taking walking trips around the neighborhood. In the classroom, children have made springtime crafts. And, our 3s classes are all aflutter with excitement for their butterfly study, having received class caterpillars last week.

The children loved celebrating with their grown-ups during last week's Family Shabbat Visits! We had grape juice and challah, and enjoyed singing songs and reading books about Shabbat. Children were especially delighted to paint their own candlestick holders to bring home. Introducing our new Junior Director for the day, Samara! Samara won this one of a kind experience as a part of our recent fundraiser auction. Today, her directorial duties included greeting families at drop off, making walkie talkie announcements, passing out flyers, choosing snack for the coming week, and reading a special story to her friends in Red Room. Thank you for keeping the school in tip top shape, Samara!
We aren't lion when we say that the children had a ROARING good time today! Local author Kara Kramer visited to read her book, Tell Me a Lion Story. This interactive tale allowed children to make up their very own lion story. Thank you, Kara! 🦁
Wishing you a very happy birthday of the trees! Children have been celebrating and learning about Tu Bishvat this week at KSK. The Yellow Room worked together to create a tree collage, featuring plenty of snow to replicate the trees they see around Brooklyn. Other classes have gotten their fine motor practice in while potting plants; scooping, digging, and placing seeds in the soil.
Last Friday, children twirled into 2024 with their first Creative Movement specialty class with Camille from Broadway Bound Kids. They loved learning to stretch different parts of their bodies, moving to music, and trying out some ballet basics. We're looking forward to seeing Camille on Fridays throughout the winter trimester!
Co-authored curriculum is central to learning at KSK! Teachers observe the children closely to learn about their interests and passions. They then create learning opportunities and explorations driven by these interests, which foster deep engagement in the curricula.
In the Green Room, children showed excitement about food and cooking at snack time and in the dramatic play area, so teachers cooked up a food-centric study, crafting meatballs and tacos with classroom materials, practicing shopping and chopping, and even visiting a neighborhood grocery store.
In the Yellow Room, children put on their construction hats for a building study, practicing their tracing skills to make blueprints, building block structures, and balancing various recycled materials to make their own towers.
We hope all of our KSK families have a fantastic Winter Break, and are looking forward to seeing you back at school in 2024! ❄️⛄️❄️
One more great picture from yesterday's classroom Hanukkah parties. Children in the Red Class were de-light-ed to make candles for the menorahs they crafted last week.
We hope you enjoyed following along with all of Kane Street Kids' Hanukkah adventures and explorations, and we wish you a joyful celebration on this final night! 🕎
Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming families into our classrooms for our Hanukkah celebrations! Children enjoyed singing, reading, and making special holiday crafts with their grown-ups. In Yellow Room, families gathered to watch the menorah being lit. Thank you to all of the members of the KSK community who gathered today; we loved seeing you!
Happy seventh night of Hanukkah! 🕎
Being housed inside of Kane Street Synagogue, our classes have access to learn firsthand about Jewish traditions. This week, Orange Class visited the synagogue's sanctuary, and noticed that the stained glass features a menorah, torah, and Star of David. Community members are always warmly welcomed to join us for a service in the sanctuary!
Happy sixth night of Hanukkah! 🕎
The children in Orange Class made a class menorah, taking turns decorating it with glitter paint. Now, they look forward to "lighting" the paper candles every day at school!
Happy fifth night of Hanukkah! 🕎
In their Hanukkah exploration, Green class students worked together to place the candles in the menorah. Children then spoke about what gifts they wanted to share with their friends and families.
Happy fourth night of Hanukkah! 🕎
During his weekly visit, our music specialist Andrew taught the children some songs for Hanukkah. Classes had so much fun singing along to "Sevivon" and "Burn Little Candle."
Happy third night of Hanukkah! 🕎
Red class has been hard at work sculpting and decorating their own menorahs using air dry clay, paint, and a lot of creativity!
Happy second night of Hanukkah! 🕎
We'll be posting for every night of Hanukkah to share all of the holiday festivities happening here at KSK! Enjoy this shot from Kane Street's Hanukkah Party, where children and their families had the opportunity to make crafts (like the dreidel sand art featured here) decorate cookies, and sing songs. Thank you to all of the families who joined in on the celebration this past weekend!
