Why this is the case probably has to do with the culture in which we live as well as the rise in more casual services across the religious spectrum. Although this would make a good article and...

Divine Mercy Chaplet with Passion Narrative (Ignatian Contemplation) Supplement
Opening Prayers
You expired, Jesus: but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.
(Repeat the following line three times)
O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You!
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
I Believe (Apostle’s Creed)…
The First Sorrowful Mystery: the Agony in the Garden
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: You led Your disciples into the garden of Gethsemane after the last supper.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: In the garden of Gethsemane You asked Your disciples to stay and watch while You went off by Yourself to pray.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: In the garden of Gethsemane You prayed that this cup be taken from You, but not Your will but the Father’s, be done.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: In the garden of Gethsemane You went back and found Your disciples sleeping. You said to them, “Could you not watch for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.”
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: In the garden of Gethsemane You went back to pray by Yourself, and this time, in Your agony Your sweat became like drops of blood.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: In the garden of Gethsemane, the third time You returned to Your disciples and said, “Are you still sleeping and taking Your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is at hand.”
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: In the garden of Gethsemane, Judas Iscariot, one of Your apostles, betrayed You with a kiss.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: In the garden of Gethsemane Peter cut off an ear of the servant of the High Priest.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: In the garden of Gethsemane You healed the servant’s ear and told Peter to put away his sword.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: In the garden of Gethsemane the soldiers bound You and led You away, and Your disciples scattered.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
The Second Sorrowful Mystery: the Scourging at the Pillar
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: The soldiers threw You into a dungeon until morning. Meanwhile, Peter denied You three times.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: In the morning the soldiers paraded You in front of the Sanhedrin and then took You to Pontius Pilate.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: Pilate sentenced You to scourging the pillar.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: The soldiers took You to the pillar and removed Your cloak so Your back, legs and arms would be bare to the blows that would follow. Then they bound you to the pillar.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: While You were bound to the pillar the soldiers flogged You ten times, lacerating your body, opening wounds, causing intense pain and profuse bleeding.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: While You were bound to the pillar the soldiers lashed You ten times, further lacerating your body, opening new wounds, causing existing wounds to widen and deepen; producing more intense pain and more profuse bleeding.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: While You were bound to the pillar the soldiers scourged You ten times, lacerating your body even further, opening still more wounds, causing existing wounds to widen and deepen; bringing about increasingly intense pain and even more profuse bleeding.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: While You were bound to the pillar the soldiers whipped You nine final times, adding new lacerations, new open wounds, deepening and widening the many wounds already there, causing ever more intense pain, ever more profuse bleeding.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: after Your horrific beating the soldiers unbound You and dragged You away, because by then You were too weak from loss of blood and in too much shock from the intense pain to even stand, let alone walk.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: After the soldiers dragged you away and the crowds dispersed, Mary, Your grieving mother, carefully, reverently wiped up Your blood that had been splattered around the pillar.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
The Third Sorrowful Mystery: the Crowning with Thorns
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: The soldiers jammed a crown of thorns on Your head which opened fresh wounds in Your scalp, and put a purple cloak on Your back which stuck to Your bleeding wounds from the scourging, and put a reed in Your hand, mocking You, shouting “All hail, king of the Jews.”
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: The soldiers then took You back to face Pilate again.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: Pilate sent You to Herod, who was visiting Jerusalem at the time.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: Herod was delighted to see You and asked You questions, but You said nothing.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: Herod and his entire court mocked You, and he sent You back to Pilate.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: Pilate asked the crowd if they wanted him to release You, or Barabbas.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: the crowd shouted ‘Release Barabbas!”
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: Pilate then argued with the crowd, saying he could find nothing of which to convict You.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: The crowd however, continued to shout “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: Pilate finally gave up and turned you over to the soldiers, to be crucified.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery: the Carrying of the Cross
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: Pilate washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. Look to it yourselves.”
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: You lifted up and embraced your cross.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: As You carried Your cross to Calvary, You stumbled and fell.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: As You carried Your cross to Calvary You encountered Mary, Your grieving mother.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: As You carried Your cross to Calvary, Simon of Cyrene was forced to help You.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: As You carried Your cross to Calvary with Simon’s help, Veronica wiped Your face.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: As You carried Your cross to Calvary with Simon’s help, You stumbled and fell again.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: As You carried Your cross to Calvary with Simon’s help, You encountered some women from Jerusalem who were grieving over Your treatment and fate.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: As You carried Your cross to Calvary with Simon’s help, You fell a third time.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: When You reached Calvary, the soldiers stripped you of your garments. When they took off Your robe, all of the wounds that had stuck to it from the scourging reopened to biting, stinging pain, and more bleeding.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
The Fifth Sorrowful Mystery: the Crucifixion
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: On Calvary, the soldiers forced You to lie down on the cross. They then drove a nail right through Your hand and into the wood of the cross, splattering blood and causing a blinding flash of excruciating pain.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: As you lay on the cross on Calvary with one hand nailed to it, the soldiers pulled Your other arm so hard it dislocated Your shoulder. Then they drove a nail right through Your other hand and into the wood of the cross, causing another splatter of blood and another intense shock of excruciating pain.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: As You lay upon the cross on Calvary with both hands nailed to it, the soldiers drove a nail right through both of Your feet and into the wood of the cross, pinning them there and causing another splattering of blood and another shock of absolutely intense, excruciating pain.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: Once your hands and feet were firmly nailed to the cross, the soldiers hoisted up that cross and drove it into the ground, so You hung there on Calvary, dying, with Your arms outstretched in love for the whole world.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: You hung, dying, for three agonizing hours on the cross on Calvary. At one point You promised Dismas, the repentant thief who hung, dying, next to You and who confessed his faith in You, a place with You in paradise that very day.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: At another point during Your three hour agony on the cross on Calvary, You gave Mary, Your grieving mother, to John, and through John to all of us, as our blessed mother.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: Near the end of Your agonizing passion, You said “I thirst”, but then refused a vinegar filled sponge that was thrust in your face on a spear.. Finally you said “It is finished.” and then to Your father: “Into your hands I commend my spirit”, and You gave up Your spirit, and died. ( pause for 5 seconds )
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: As Your dead body hung upon the cross on Calvary, a soldier drove a spear through Your side and into Your heart, and blood and water gushed forth as a fountain of mercy for the whole world.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: Your disciples and friends gently, reverently removed Your dead body from the wood of the cross and placed it into the arms of Mary, Your grieving mother.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
We remember, Jesus, and we thank You: They then reverently, gently took Your dead body from the arms of Your grieving mother and carried it off Calvary to a newly hewn tomb in the rock, and laid it there.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
Closing Prayers
Repeat the following line three times:
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself. Amen.
