How do cold temperatures affect those with sickle cell disease? People with SCD often report acute pain within hours after exposure to cold temperatures. As your body uses more oxygen to stay warm, it reduces the amount of oxygen in red blood cells and can cause blood flow to slow down. This can cause sickle cells to get stuck.
