Coming full circle. ⭕

We couldn’t close for the season without first talking about Hole #18.

No Mini Golf course is complete without a windmill. The one you’ll find at Hole #18, holds greater significance than just its aesthetic appeal.

Shoot the Breeze: Back to the Future with Wind Energy by Alison Simko and Kate Mulhauser, displays a windmill to remind us of where we came from and where we are headed.

Windmills powered life for settlers of New Amsterdam, and the city’s seal even features 17th c. windmill blades. To meet renewable power goals, NY State is developing offshore wind farms, returning to an energy source used 400 years ago.

Today, New York State is developing offshore wind farms that will power millions of homes. Within 10 years, energy generated by wind will provide 70% of the state’s electrical power. By 2040, New York State aims to produce 100% carbon-free power, an ambitious goal achievable only with wind power. 🌬

More green, please! 🌳

Together, Julie Ember and Katie Shima built Hole #17, GREEN IT, NYC!

Did you know that 40% of NYC’s land cover is green? Trees, parks and wetlands sequester carbon, playing a critical role in meeting the city’s ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets, lessen the urban heat island effect, provide wildlife habitat, and help New Yorkers connect with nature.

Some ways to make NYC even greener: add green roofs to homes, offices, and civic buildings; support urban farming and community gardening; Request street trees; advocate for parks and green streets through participatory budgeting and calling representatives; and preserving and restoring critical natural areas, like wetlands to help mitigate storm surges and protect habitats of diverse species.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint🚊📉👣

Hole #16, Fore-ward Thinking by Engineering & Design Firm, WSP, is making us appreciate living in a city where extensive and accessible public transportation systems are all around us! Cities like ours score high on the sustainability and social equity scale in comparison to suburban and rural areas.

For example, New York City's subway system can take you to any of its 472 stations emissions-free, making it a climate-conscious choice for city dwellers.

When you can, opt for the train!

More Oysters = Healthier Waterways💙

Project, Chris Edmonds & Nat Quinn designed hole #15, ‘The Big Oyster,’ to teach us about the power of oysters.

Did you know that oysters pump water through their gills, filtering toxic particles? Though once ubiquitous in NY Harbor, they’ve nearly disappeared due to overfishing, pollution, and habitat loss.

Providing important habitat for fish, crabs, worms, and other animals, oysters are critical to better water quality.

Since 2014, Billion Oyster Project has planted 45 million oysters in the harbor, restoring 12 acres of habitat at 15 reef sites, with the help of more than 6k students and 10k volunteers.

Meat ➡️ Methane

Did you know that meat-eaters are responsible for 1.5 more tons of greenhouse gases than vegans, per year? Hole #14, ‘Methane Madness’ by the Institute for Aesthletics & Tom Russotti, takes us through some of the complexities of eating meat.

When cows digest food, microbes in their stomachs break down feed and produce about 220 lbs of methane a year. As global consumer demand for beef rises, sustainable farming practices are starting to address agricultural methane production.

As demand for beef grows, adoption of sustainable farming and land management practices across the agriculture industry will decelerate deforestation and promote rewilding of converted forests and grasslands.

COMPOST FORE NYC!

Hole #13, ‘COMPOST FORE NYC’ by DSNY Sanitation Foundation, is all about one of our favorite activities - composting!

Almost a third of NYC’s waste stream is organic matter. When sent to landfills, organics decompose and emit methane. Turning scraps into compost reduces these emissions and returns nutrients to the soil, completing the beneficial growth cycle.

You can drop off food scraps next door at from Thursday, June 4 - Friday, December 31, weekly from 6pm - 8pm.

Not all buildings are created equal.🏢

Hole #12, Energy Efficient Buildings, was designed by The NYC Climate Action Alliance (NYCCAA) and brings awareness to the fact that nearly 70% of NYC’s greenhouse gas emissions come from the city’s pre-war buildings, which are inefficient and in need of retrofitting.

Ways building owners can lower their emissions include updating lighting, plug load and HVAC strategies.📉

Let’s talk about Forest Fires👇🏻

Hole #10, Forest Fires by Blane De St. Croix, Paul Amenta and Ted Lott, demonstrates the useful role periodic wildland fires play in the life cycle of a forest.

However, dry conditions caused by global warming have increased wildfires’ frequency and severity, leading to loss of life and crops, and deterioration in air quality.

From the designer: “…there is no point at which action becomes pointless. We all must act now!”

Ice is essential❄️

Hole #9, Ice Melt by Blane De St. Croix, Paul Armenta, and Ted Lott, serves putters with some eye-opening stats on our melting glaciers.

Approximately 15% of the planet’s oceans are covered by sea ice for some part of the year. This coverage reflects sunlight away from the earth’s surface and back into outer space. The reflective process helps to keep the temperature of the earth’s air and oceans stable. As global carbon emissions cause temperatures at the poles to rise, sea ice melts, and ocean coverage is reduced. Sea ice is declining by more than 10% every decade, impacting oceanic and atmospheric temperatures. This temperature increase alters ocean circulation and the jet stream, impacting weather patterns around the world.

Slow the surge! 🌊

Hole #8, Surge Garden designed by Students from The Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design (WHSAD), draws attention to the impact of increasing sea level rise and storms are having on NYC’s 520 miles of waterfront due to climate change. The likelihood of floodwaters breaching the City’s shorelines and inundating neighborhoods and infrastructure is increasing significantly. To adapt to these changing conditions, coastal cities around the world are modifying their shorelines to mitigate storm surges with living breakwaters, rip-rap revetment, native shoreline plantings, and live fascines.

Choose the right path! 🛣

Hole #7, Two Paths, designed by The Lower Eastside Girls Club calls attention to the alarming direction we are headed;

Currently, human demand exceeds the regenerative capacity of the planet. Therefore, urgent action is needed to make sure that the global population can meet its needs while ensuring the sustenance of future life on Earth.

Having a whale of a time with the Crochet Artist of hole #2, Whale Fall Feast!

A word from her experience below:

"I’m in awe of this project because it brought together so many people I didn’t know before- so many communities near and far- from California to Colorado to New Jersey and New York. We all collectively worked on gathering plastics in our cities and with much help from for the opportunity in making a space for locals to drop-off their plastics and for their generous amounts of past plastic bags. 🙌🏼

11 of us crocheted thousands of one-time-use plastic bags, packaging, things that held fruit and veggies, breads, pastas, and beyond.....it was a whirlwind of collecting, sorting, and cutting into our yarn to say the least, but it was the best time meeting and gathering via zoom and in person every week (!) to crochet together til the very end. This wasn’t possible without everyone’s dedication and hard work, even with full time jobs and families to care for. Our group of new-found friends has been developed and strengthened by the multitude of such a fascinating piece of art: crochet. Two members had never crocheted before, and wanted to simply be a part of the project - and learn to crochet, too. It has been overwhelming to say the least what 11 of us can do together, help one another, route each other on, and share our lives, interests, and passions. THANK 👏🏼YOU👏🏼

Thank you . It’s a great collab and beautiful message to be a part of! Thank you to all the hard working fabricators who worked through these hot SUNNY and dreary days. We are grateful for your work 🙏🏼🌎 ♻️🌲

The mini golf course is now open starting July 4th 💥 and will be on display for approximately 3 years...! We played for the first time during the soft opening and it was so fun and a great for a time to stop and learn so many things about climate change and be introduced to multiple artists and beyond who made this into an interactive fun, family activity. I hope you enjoy! X taryn 💦"
