White wine during the winter? Yes please!

Most lean towards reds during winter months, but white wine can be equally enjoyable. Reach for white wines with a more plush and creamy mouthfeel to conjure those warm feelings. We have a fantastic selection of winter-friendly whites. We also have summer go-to whites in case you’d like to reminisce about warmer days.

Cheers!

Winemaker Joey Tensley adores Syrah. Of the Santa Barbara vineyards he harvests, the fruit from Colson Canyon vineyard is consistently impeccable. The eight-acre vineyard is located 1,400 feet above sea level and uniquely contains iron and calcareous-rock rich soil. The vines bake in the afternoon sun and benefit from the vineyard’s cool ocean breeze. These hot and cold influences allow the Syrah grapes to mature longer on the vine, yielding ripe, dense, concentrate fruit. This is the only wine Joey Tensley ages in some new French oak as the wine’s focus and vigor is soften by and integrates with the oak. The result: a wine that can be enjoyed young with all its vivacity or can be aged for 10 to 20 years, transforming its bright blue fruit notes to stewed fruit notes and allowing its leathery, earthy, and secondary flavors to surface. The 2019 Tensely Wine Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah is a truly remarkable wine!

Joey Tensley launched Tensley Wines in 1998 with one goal in mind: craft superb Syrah-focused wines that highlight Santa Barbara County’s terroir. Through much grit and diligent work, he found early success with his 2001 vintage. Two of Tensley Wine’s 2001 Syrah reds were ranked in the Wine Spectator Top Ten Wines in the World and Robert Parker scored all of the 2001 wines in the high 90s. Joey Tensley would continue to craft superb age-worthy wines that overdeliver on price. More recently, he built on this price-to-value theme by launching Fundamental Wines in 2017. These are crowd-pleasing wines you can enjoy daily.

The 2019 Fundamental Red Blend is made up of 50% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 12% Mourvedre, and 3% Viognier. Each varietal plays an integral role in the overall wine. The sum is greater than the parts. Syrah is the backbone, adding weight, blue and black fruit notes, and pleasant tannins. Grenache adds red flower as well as red fruit notes plus lifted, snappy acidity. Mourvedre brings a touch of earthy and savory flavors, while the Viognier softens the wine with floral aromatics and shy stone fruit notes. Balanced and pure, the 2019 Fundamental Red Blend showcases Joey Tensley’s winemaking skill and desire to consistently overdeliver.

Fall season is in full swing! Time to reach for a comforting and warming bottle of red wine!

Clos Marie’s 2016 “Les Trois Saisons” is an ideal choice. Its textured mouthfeel, silky tannins, and dense bouquet of over-ripe dark cherries, wild strawberries, and nutrient-rich soil pair beautifully with the Fall season. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, Clos Marie showcases the high quality and expressive wines Languedoc has to offer.

Stop by today for a fantastic Fall red! Cheers!

A blend of approximately equal parts Frappato and Perricone, Azienda Agricola Flavia’s 2020 “Taille” is lively and youthful with aromas of crushed wild strawberries, ripe sweet cherries, and crinkled herbs. Crunchy and easy-drinking, this Frappato and Perricone blend accentuates the best of each varietal. Frappato is a light-bodied grape known for producing wines with juicy red fruit notes and a lifted spirit. Perricone, on the other hand, is a lesser-known grape with noticeable tannins and deep pigments. Azienda Agricola Flavia carefully blends the grapes to produce a balanced natural wine that drinks incredibly well on its own and has the structure to pair well with many cuisines. The 2020 “Taille” is a pure and honest wine.

With over five centuries of agricultural experience and spanning seventeen generations, the Planeta family embodies the essence and purity of Sicily through their wine. The Planeta estate consists of vineyards in five of Sicily’s its most representative regions: Menfi, Vittoria, Noto, Etna and Capo Milazzo. The various soil types, microclimates, and terroirs allows the family to successfully cultivate indigenous as well as international varietals.

Of the indigenous varietals, their Frappato is sourced from the Mogli vineyard in Vittoria and produces delicious, textured wine. The 2018 vintage Planeta Frappato is a beautiful ruby red in the glass. A bouquet of fresh roses, violets and lilacs are interwoven with aromas of dark cherry, wild strawberry and sweet aged balsamic. The wine is round and textured on the palate. Delightfully balanced, its mouthwatering acidity and silky tannins are in harmony. The Planeta Frappato is a wine you will immediately fall in love with and consistently revisit thereafter.

Muscadet always tickles thoughts of shucked oysters, cracked crab, and fresh shrimp. All of the ocean's best comes to mind. The vineyards in Loire Valley’s Sevre et Maine appellation are located at the junction of two rivers and have soils rich in decomposed seabeds, full of old seashells. These traits are transposed into the wine, making it the ideal pairing for fresh seafood!

Domaine de la Furonniere’s wine is a classic rendition of Muscadet. Furonniere is a family-owned winery in the heart of Loire Valley. Dedicated to bringing out the best of the Muscadet, the Furonniere winemaking team uses techniques passed down from grandfather to father to son. The team spends ample time on each vintage, aging the wine sur lie. This sur lie wine aging adds a creamy component to the wine that complements its zippy acidity. Their wines are lively, crisp and clean, with a nice backbone of melon, minerals and brine. You can smell the ocean in every glass! What’s more, there is a delightful roundness to the wine that will keep you coming back for another sip.

Bold and powerful, aged white wines will forever change your interpretation of the white wine category. The layers of flavor and depth of character make aged white wines truly memorable. Looking for an aged white wine to experience? Reach for Domaine du Fief aux Dames’s 2012 Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine. Remarkably complex on the nose, the wine will captivate you with its secondary and tertiary aromas. The palate is equally complex with salted honey and bruised citrus fruit flavors. The wine lingers and is one of those rare decant-worthy whites!

November 1st is approaching, so it is time for me to write our monthly Wine Club letter!

Month-after-month, I approach a blank canvas and a wine club theme in mind. It is always a challenge to start, but so rewarding once finished. What’s more, I look forward to the positive (and at times constructive) feedback from our Wine Club members.

Join our Wine Club to enjoy great wine and thoughtful prose!

As Italy’s southernmost wine region and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily has a long and prosperous wine history. Azienda Agricola Flavia has produced delicious Sicilian wine since the 1860s. The family-owned winery, now in its fourth generation, has implemented organic and biodynamic viticulture practices. What’s more, Azienda Agricola Flavia has transitioned to predominantly 1L wine bottles due to the environmental benefits. Their wines are fresh, vibrant, and bright, so we are very fortunate to enjoy them in this larger format!

Azienda Agricola Flavia’s 2020 “Ava” sees extended skin-contact and is bottled unfiltered and unfined. This Grillo Orange wine bursts with musty, earthy aromas blended with unripe clementine and green mango fruit notes. The dominate aromas foreshadow the palate. The wine is fleshy and textured with lots of acidity, cheeky tannins, and a beautiful mineral citrus finish. It’s a fantastic natural wine!

Cheers!

Zesty and vibrant, Azienda Agricola Pianogrillo’s 2019 Grillo will charm white as well as red wine lovers alike!

Pianogrillo is an 80 hectare Sicilian property and farm. Known for its organic extra virgin olive oil, the estate also includes over 6 hectares of bush-trained vineyards, with an average vine age of 10 years. In 2014, Azienda Agricola Pianogrillo inaugurated its modern winemaking facilities and cellar, allowing the winery to increase its production and truly showcase its terroir. The 2019 Grillo embodies the wineries prowess as the wine is precise and true. Mineral, saline and tart stone fruit aromas characterize the wine’s bouquet. Mouthwatering acidity and a prolonged finish define the palate along with citrus and yellow floral flavors. This Sicilian white is genuinely charming!

Cheers!

Champagne is not only for special occasions! It should be enjoyed as frequently as any bottle of white or red wine. Celebrate the start of a new week with a delicious bottle of bubbly!
