STOP focusing on what we ‘called’ your Clothing Personality and start learning the ELEMENTS that make it up. ⁠

I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I get A LOT of messages asking what my Clothing Personality is (CP for short), because people think we have the same one… and honestly, I never answer, because knowing my CP will not help YOU in any way.⁠

What my Clothing Personality tells you is the collection of elements that were recommended to me that will be most harmonious with my body architecture and taste - but that doesn’t mean that I follow them like a rule book every single day!⁠

And if you don’t actually understand the elements that make up your own Clothing Personality, and you go online looking for other people with your same CP, you could really be hurting your process. ⁠

WHO KNOWS if that person is actually following the guidelines, or if they’re choosing to “color outside of the lines”? If you don’t understand the elements, looking at their outfits will not help you - and more importantly, it could really hurt your understanding of what actually works for you!⁠

I’ll say it again because it’s that important: ⁠

IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND THE ELEMENTS THAT MAKE UP YOUR CLOTHING PERSONALITY, LOOKING AT PEOPLE WITH THE SAME CP * *WILL NOT ** HELP YOU.⁠

Focus on what matters; on the elements are that make up your CP:⁠

❓What is the scale?⁠
⁠
❓What is the structure? ⁠
⁠
❓What’s the texture? ⁠
⁠
❓What’s the shape?⁠

It’s really important that you learn to understand those, because those will be the elements that you can learn to recognize and take inspiration from in ANYONE’S outfits, on runways, in stores… Not just from other people with your same CP.⁠

Focus on the elements, and start looking for those in the wild. That’s what will get you the results!⁠

The great thing about knowing your best colors is that once you know what they are, you discover everything mixes and matches. And your lip products are no different!

At House of Colour, we like to call lip combinations ‘Lipstick Cocktails’ - it’s when you layer a little of this, and a dab of that, and you end up with a fun new color on your lips that is DEFINITELY in your season. 😃

When I got my colors done, I discovered that I already had a few things in my closet in my colors. This purple top was one of them. 💁🏻‍♀️

I wasn’t wearing it a lot before my color appointment, and I thought:

“For sure I’ll wear it more once everything in my wardrobe also goes with it!”

NARRATOR: “She did not, in fact, wear the purple top more.” 🙈

What I didn’t know at the time was that even though the color was right, the classic style of the top was just too plain for my personality. It looked good on me, I could see that, but it didn’t FEEL like me. My outfit felt boring when I wore it.

I would try it on every morning, and ended up changing out of it before I left the house. 😒

In Style Analysis class, I learned exactly WHY I was not wearing items I’ve had in my closet for years, even though they were in my colors - and most importantly, I learned how to stop myself from buying things that I would never wear.

“Do you look like this every day?”

I was taken aback the first few times I was asked this question. I didn’t understand what people meant. “What do you mean, like this?”

“So put together” they would say.

And I had to think about it, because the truth is: I don’t make a big effort to get ready most mornings. I used to, but these days I can get ready, shower included, in about 20 minutes.

“You must have some 💩-ier clothes, and you’re just wearing your nice clothes today” a client said to me.

But the truth is… I don’t. My clothes are not particularly nice or expensive, but I don’t keep anything that could be described as 💩-y.

Why?

Because it’s very difficult for someone to look 💩-y if they don’t have any 💩-y clothes. 🤷🏻‍♀️

(Note how I didn’t say ‘expensive’, I just said, not 💩-y).

If everything you own is in your colors and looks great on you, it’s very easy for you to look amazing everyday, without even trying.

And that’s how I help you! I help you identify just the things that are going to look great on you.

June is LGBT Pride Month, and people often write to ask me if I work with people who are identify as LGBTQIA2S+ so I thought this post was timely…

The answer is YES, of course I do! Color and Style can be helpful for everyone, and EVERYONE is welcome in my studio.

I don’t particularly share my client’s identity or orientation for several reasons; sometimes people prefer that their images are not shared (which is totally up to them!), but mostly because how someone identifies as is not relevant to the power of color and style. A good transformation is a good transformation, regardless of someone’s identity.

As a business owner, I do implement a couple of policies that aim to make everyone feel included:

- We offer gender neutral pricing.
- Everyone gets asked their preferred pronouns before coming to the studio.
- Everyone is offered to opt-in, or opt-out of, the experience of makeup - regardless of gender or pronouns.
- I’ll always shop client’s in the departments they are most comfortable dressing in, regardless of how garments are gendered in stores.

There’s a lot of room for improvement, I’m sure, and I sense that a lot of it could be in areas that I’m not even aware of, but I’m open to listening and always want to make sure people know they are welcome.

So if you are wondering if I work with people who identify as LGBTQIA2S+, the answer is YES! You’re welcome in my studio, and I would be happy and lucky to have you.

I’m grateful that we live in a time that aims to honor and respect everyone, when all love is celebrated, and when equality is the goal. Happy PRIDE!!

I’ll let you in on a little secret…

Most people have it backwards.

They go shopping and they ‘consider’ everything they could take home.

“Oh this is cute!”

“This style is super trendy!”

“This one’s on sale!”

But shopping for clothing should be a process of ELIMINATION, not consideration.

You should be shopping for clothing trying to find all the reasons why you SHOULDN’T be buying something:

🌈 Not in your colors? It’s out.

👗 The garment shape is not what your body needs? We’ll leave it at the store.

🥴 Doesn’t fit you comfortably? Fabric too scratchy? Put it back.

⚖️ Is the scale the wrong size for you? Why even bother.

➷ Are the features & details in the wrong place for your body architecture? You know you won’t wear it.

🗝️ Doesn’t fit into your Style key words? Bye, bye, bye!

Being ruthless when you’re shopping will help you build a great wardrobe over time. We are high-maintenance and picky when we shop so we can be low-maintenance every other day. 😌

Remember, it’s up to you to be the meanest, toughest bouncer that protects the night club that is your wardrobe - and only the best of the best get in!

This inexpensive but mighty feature is a great addition to the closet of your dreams!

During Style Class, one of the things I recommend my clients do is install a valet rod in, or near, their closets.

A valet rod is a simple “hook” that can keep your clothes looking great for longer. Some extend out, some fold up; but as little and cheap as they can b, they are incredibly versatile features!

Here’s three ways I recommend you use them:

1️⃣ Most of us are throwing our clothes in the washing machine more often than we need to, and you know what damages your clothing the most? The washing machine! 🤯 Valet rods are a great place to ‘air out’ your day’s clothes overnight so they’re ready for a sniff test in the morning.

2️⃣ If you’re someone who feels like they need to ‘see’ the outfit before trying it on, valet rods are a great way to do that! Plan outfits in advance or hang them out the night before - it’ll make getting ready in the morning a breeze!

3️⃣ Valet rods are a great place for steaming your garments! No need to hang them from a shower curtain rod or hunt around the room for an optimal place. Build it into your closet, and it there will be less friction to get those wrinkles out!

Feel like you can’t stop buying clothes that fall apart easily, or that you never wear? Here’s how to fix it.

Allow yourself to spend more money per piece when you buy clothes. In other words: you gotta stop buying something just cause it’s cheap!

WHY? It’s simple, really: You expect more from things you paid more for!!!

When you’re buying something because it’s cheap, you are more likely to forgive when it falls apart after a couple of washes.

“Well, it was $10, so what could I expect?”

“I only wore it once, but it was only $20”

But the thing is that over time, these little purchases add up, and you end spending more than you would have otherwise.

Plus, when you’re gonna drop a pretty penny on piece of clothing, you make sure EVERY SINGLE THING about it is on point:

✅ The quality

✅ The color

✅ The fit

✅ The material

✅ The care label…

Which makes you pause. You’re only gonna buy it if you’re CONVINCED you will wear it a lot. And that’s how EVERY purchase should be.

This practice, over time, makes you a better shopper. Even if you do find something inexpensive that you want to add to your wardrobe, you will make sure it’s a good deal for the $$… not just an impulse purchase cause it’s cheap.

💾 Save this post, because the more often you are reminded of this, the higher chance you’ll actually fix it.

✅Want to keep your dry-clean only clothes looking new for a long time?

TAKE THEM OUT OF THE DRY-CLEANER BAGS THE SECOND YOU GET HOME! ‼️

Leaving garments inside the plastic bags and placing them in your closet is TERRIBLE for them. You might think that you’re protecting them, but you’re actually causing these three problems.

1️⃣ YELLOWING

The chemicals used in dry cleaning need to be aired out! If you leave your garments in there, these chemicals over time will cause your clothing to yellow or change color. What a waste!

2️⃣ MILDEW

News flash, but dry cleaning is not dry at all, and leaving the garments in the plastic bags traps moisture, which can cause mildew in your clothing. Yuck!

3️⃣ WHAT WAS OLD IS NEW AGAIN

Once your clothes are all clean and pressed, it gives them a sense of ‘new-ness’ again… making you less likely to wear them and wanting to save them! Remove the plastic bags immediately and cycle the items back into your closet, so you get plenty of use out of them again.

(Don’t forget to 💾SAVE this post - because removing the bag is super important!!)

Spring is here! And though it may be still cold outside, I wanted to show you a how a Spring can still be GLOWING in her colors.

For this stunning Spring in particular, the changes when she’s in her colors are drastic:

First, her skin overall looks warmer. 😎 In cool colors she appears to have been sitting outside in the middle of Winter 🥶 but in her best colors, her skin looks like it was gently kissed by the sun.

Next, her eyes look brighter! 😃The whites of her eyes look whiter, and she looks like she good some good rest the previous night.

Finally, jaw line, hello?!! 😊 In her colors, the jawline gets better defined, and her features come into focus.
