We’ll be taking a deep dive into one of our favorite quilt blocks of all time, the Half Square Triangle (HST). Using Jenni Baker’s book Patchwork Essentials: The Half Square Triangle, we’ll spend the weekend exploring assembly methods and design possibilities with HSTs.

Together, we’ll explore the book and learn handy techniques.

For this retreat, we’re doing the demos a bit differently: The demos will be recorded before the retreat starts, and available to watch ahead of time if you want to (we know some attendees like to get organized before the weekend starts). We will play the demos live in the retreat on Firday, Saturday, and Sunday, so that you can ask questions or give feedback, and the videos will be available to rewatch after the retreat as well.

The 3 demo topics are:

Color & Scale for for HSTs
3 techniques for piecing HSTs and how to make your own “scrap fabric”
Using the book’s Block Chart and PreQuilt to plan quilts
Included in your retreat package:

a copy of the Patchwork Essentials book (or the fabric bundle)

Jen has been experimenting with doing a Kawandi-style method entirely by machine, and has figured out an easy-to-learn technique to create unique pieces like the placement pictured above. And this coming Sunday, she’s teaching this technique live on Zoom!

This variation has all the fun of traditional Kawandi quilting, but without all the handwork. In the virtual class, you’ll be making a 12” by 18” placemat like you see above.
