Did you know that Thomas Mundy Peterson was the first Black American to vote in 1870 after the passage of the 15th Amendment? Even after it passed, barriers such as poll taxes were implemented in an attempt to prevent Black Americans from voting, and not until the Voting Rights Act nearly a century later in 1965 were those barriers outlawed, affirming the protection of Black Americans' right to vote. Here at Democracy Works, we recognize Black History Month by remembering our history and working to ensure that Americans can vote, no matter what.
