Sharing ladoos marks the celebration of any occasion in Indian culture. Whether it’s to celebrate diwali, the birth of a baby, or a promotion at work, you can count on these delicious desserts being there. While we enjoy all kinds of ladoos on every occasion, they were originally created for medicinal purposes.
Besan ladoo is made of simple ingredients like chickpea flour, ghee, and spices. Varieties of ladoo were first used as medicine in the 4th century BC by Indian physician, Susruta. With the antibacterial properties of honey and the immunity boosting properties of nuts and seeds, ladoos were given to patients to aid in antisepsis. Overtime, these useful tools of Ayurveda evolved into all different flavors and varieties of the sweets we know and love today, with besan ladoo being one of the most popular ones.
Besan ladoo has always been one of Chef Surbhi’s favorite flavors. When she was young, her parents would bring besan ladoos home from the store while they were still fresh. Within minutes, all of the warm, golden ladoos were gone. The roasted flavor of the chickpea flour with the sweetness of shakkar (indian brown sugar) make this combination irresistible. This is a home sweet made with love and care in many homes throughout India. Even though we can't send these warm to you, we promise you these golden beauties won't last too long on any table.
We decorate our besan ladoo in gold because it helps us celebrate this simple ingredients while highlighting the magic of the everyday. The beautifully nutty flavor of the roasted chickpea flour is accentuated by the time and love that go into making this delicious and historic sweets.
This Diwali, join us for a five course prix fixe dinner celebrating the Festival of Lights with the flavors of Punjab and Bengal.
Available on 11/12, celebrate Diwali with your loved ones at our Diwali Dinner.

Our vibrant thandai burfi is a riff on thandai, a cold milk drink made from an indulgent mix of nuts, seeds, and spices. It’s often infused with bhang, a type of cannabis preparation, for the adults. This drink is a hallmark of Holi, the festival of colors. Holi has been celebrated in India for centuries, with poems about the holiday dating back to the 4th century. The ancient holiday celebrates the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. This joyful welcoming of springtime is always accompanied by thandai, bright colors, and sweets like gujiya. In Hindi thandai translates to “something that is cold”. While playing colors and enjoying the end of winter, this sweet and refreshing drink is said to prepare the body for summer and keep it cool.
Chef Surbhi, like most Indians, grew up drinking thandai every year in celebration of the holiday. The sweet, nutty taste of thandai always brings back memories of Holi and playing colors to celebrate the end of winter. For Chef Surbhi, Holi memories include trying the thandai at every house in the neighborhood where she grew up and figuring out whose mom made the best thandai to wait in line outside of the house for a glass of the sweet drink.
This burfi is a bite-sized piece of joy. Each piece is packed with flavor from the almonds, rose gulkand, fennel, ginger, and cardamom. The nuttiness of the burfi really shines alongside the mix of spices that come together in this carefully crafted dessert, with each piece hand decorated with a mix of vibrant colors to reflect the throwing of colors during Holi. Every bite of mithai brings back old memories and sets the scene for new ones too.
